So, now that I've decided to give up on Hurawalhi and start Fogford again, I'm finally deciding some lore for it! Instead of making my island bright and colorful, which just never worked for me, I want this island to be on the gloomier side. Not necessarily scary or spooky, just, like I said, on the gloomy, dark side. I want it to heavily feature the Mush furniture, so currently I have my island set to May (since the island is on the Southern Hemisphere), and I'm collecting mushrooms and Mush DIY recipes. The lore I have set for Fogford is that the island, very swampy in nature, once served as a graveyard for fairies before being abandoned centuries ago, but, of course, has since been built over by Nook and the crew. Thus, along with mushrooms, I'd like the island to feature a lot of black flowers and things like fairy circles that the living left to remember the dead. This is going to be a very natural island, so I don't plan on doing any terraforming, though I may try to make a skull-shaped pond at some point. I don't necessarily have set villagers, as I do like to mix things up, but I know for sure that I'm going to try my best and get Cherry, Bella, and Cyd moved in. I've never done anything like this before, so if any of you guys have ideas or designs you think I should use, please lmk!

I would have at least one Stonehenge in the middle of the forest. I pointed out to a friend before that the museum kinda looks like a mausoleum. Lots of mushroom lamps and Hyacinth lamps around. It sounds like you trying for a mix between cottagecore and spooky.

Umbrella patterns are good too. There's lot of them for other bushes and foliage so you dont have to use just the ones from Leif.

I'm thinking more swampcore than cottagecore, but this is definitely a start! The mushroom lamps are why I'm currently hoarding mushrooms. Didn't think of hyacinth lamps, though.

I LOVE this idea, bb! My island is more of a vibrant, rustic autumn island, but I definitely have designs saved that I think would work for yours! I’ll go find them and post here for you. UwU

You can get a gloomy look through lightning too!

All right! These are all the ones I think would help with your theme :3. I actually use some of these on my island as well. ✨💛

I love the worn cobblestone path by Emily creator code MA-8847-7939-8277. The ground shows through its transparency.

Red pansies, orange windflowers, black cosmos, purple pansies, and black lilies all look nice with darker decor. The white statues can look neat with tomb stones, especially in a wooded grotto type area.

The deer scare adds an atmospheric noise.

I agree with the previous post about Stonehenge. Also, stone lion dogs and tall lanterns can add to a gloomy environment as can black street lamps in the town areas.

I know this isn't what you asked and might kill your buzz a bit but I felt it is worth saying.

Personally I would advise against going into a theme for your new island for a while.

I'm currently making an island themed around autumn, Halloween, and the colour orange (and brown too I guess since meh close enough).
Its not as nice and easy as it might seem.

Nearly all the furniture on sale and able to be crafted via DIY in the early game is useless to you because it doesn't fit the theme.

In general filling spaces with items will be harder as the pool of items that work with your theme will be smaller, but the amount of land needed to fill it won't change. In fact if you dont make ponds or move rivers, it could actually be larger.

I'm going with just orange flowers of all types and breeding them is a pain.
I bought several hundred different orange flowers on here and it's not enough to fill in everywhere I want them.
I breed for more and I get colours that aren't orange. It's going to be a long time before the flowers fill in all the gaps.

If I want my villagers to fit into the theme, it means I am unable to have the villagers I would actually want on this island.
I was fortunate that my theme meant I could have Sheldon and buzz who I love. But I really wish I could have Frobert as he is cool. He not only doesn't fit the theme but clashes with it. Can't have him.

I'm not trying to convince you not to go down this route as such.
Just pointing out that it can be just as troublesome, if not more so, than terraforming is.
