I have been playing for about a year and have caught many bugs but the Golden Stag & Horned Hercules are impossible. I can run up and down my beach with about 15 palm trees and not find a single bug. I daily literally run 20 to 30 times up and down without seeing anything. On the off chance that I do see a bug that I don't recognize, it flies away before I can get in range with my net. Is it possible that they have made a trick to getting these two bugs? Kind of like the trick for Tranchulas and Scorpions where you have to inch your way up to them? At this rate, there is no way I will have them before they go away. Also, my wife is having the same problem so it is not just my island. Any help is appreciated.
It's easier if you go to a Nook Miles island. Chop down every tree but the palms, dig out all the stumps, pick every flower and weed (you can drop them somewhere out of the way), and just run circles around the island. Make sure to creep with your net when you're within 4 or 5 tiles of the palm trees. If you eat fruit you can dig out and reposition the palms if they aren't in a good spot. Good luck!

To add to this, I break the rocks too to avoid those bugs spawning. Bring a few extra palm trees to plant there to increase your chances.
Catch/sacre away all other bugs. Make sure you scare away wharf roaches (on the beach rocks)
Those are some of the rarest beetles in the game (another tricky one is giraffe beetle) Hope you find your golden buggo soon!

it took me ages to find both of those bugs too, and i sneak up on Every Bug. i had to show up in game at around 3am to finally catch both of them.
i just checked how to catch them and it says you have to catch 100 bugs in order for the horned hercules to spawn, im guessing the same for the golden stag too. i know it drove me nuts so i just went around catching every bug available until they finally spawned up as well.

At sound like a All night event. I Did those tricks and lucky i had two days where i was not need to do stuff and allow to sleep in. Try Nook miles island back to back in the hours to show up. Those bugs can be a pain in the Trainmission. Lol I got the pain in the Trainmission from a Sonic 90s era show btw.

I too have seen this. Do you know if this means that you have to have caught 100 bugs totally in the game since the start, or 100 bugs in the day that you are playing? I also found where it said that these two bugs are super skittish and if you sneak up on them at regular sneak speed they will fly. You have to go at the slowest sneak speed possible. Will give it a try.
I personally prefer the bamboo island of the NMT islands. There are no ponds or rivers. Meaning there will be no water bugs that will spawn
You’ll want to bring an axe and shovel with you though. The axe to chop down all the bamboo trees and the shovels to dig out the roots and break all the rocks.
You’ll also want to pluck all the flowers. Pick up all the seashells along the shoreline. Put the plucked flowers and shells on the rocky outcrop near the back of the island.
You may want to reposition the two front palm trees a little bit more away from the shoreline (otherwise where the trees are planted by default is a bit too close to the shore and you can’t position yourself to sneak up on them).
After which, run around scaring all the bugs you don’t want. Make sure to check the rocky outcrops because sometimes there are wharf roaches there. Check along the shorelines as well for any seashells that you see because those are hermit crabs that need to be scared away also.
Do be careful about running around with your net out, sometimes the island will spawn tarantula/scorpions (depending on your hemisphere). This is also why you cut down all the bamboo and dug up the stumps. So you can see to scare away the ground beetles, but also to see death running full speed at you.

im sure it has to be the bugs that you catch that night. i had gone well over catching 100 bugs in the game already *i grind island to get scorpions for flick*.
if you are literally running don't. running scares the bugs away. walk up and down the beach. yes ive heard of the ones that you have to catch a certain amount for them to spawn. Also some only come out very late at night so take that into consideration as well. the golden stag is the rarely and i think horned hercules is the next rarest and that makes them the most easily scared away too. with the island designer app you can put down the sand path on non beach areas and palm trees will grow there, this would give u more palm trees to check.
I caught my first golden stag this morning. I have been trying every morning since the start of July by pacing up and down my beach. The layout of my island means that I have some coconut trees a bit separated from the rest so I go between the two sets which helps with spawning I find. I also start at the bottom of my beach, as I'm paranoid about scaring away a bug I haven't caught because I didn't see it in time. By working up from the bottom, I can at least see what beetles are on the trees.
Good luck! I know the feeling of having only a couple more to go - I only have a giraffe stag to go now, but I am feeling reasonably confident given that I have over a month and a half, but part of me just wants to get it over with in order to completely finish my critterpedia!

This. A lot of the palm bugs are much more sensitive to movement than other bugs (even normal walking can scare them). If I recall from last summer, one of the palm bugs was so skittish that I had to go i n c r e d i b l y slow in order to find and catch.
Also, I feel like some bugs/fish become more prevalent at different months, even if they are technically available on a said month. I recall having better luck bug hunting in August v. July last year. It may be a RNG thing though.
It took me forever to find the Golden Stag, until just the other day I loaded up my game and it was literally the first bug I came across lol. My main tip, which you might already be doing, is don’t run at all - even when you feel like you are far away from the tree. I’ve found that rarer bugs can be scared away even before I see them on my screen.
