What about those disposable bbq mesh and something heavy to put on it? If it is not wide enough, ductape the open end so that she cant monkeybar out and not have anything tall in that exposed area.
I'm a little baffled when i see diy bin cages tutorials because everyone seems obsessed with cutting the lid to add mesh (in which they have to cut the jagged bits) and a bunch of duct tape to cover the edges.

I was going to make a lid, but she likes to chew the bars so much... Plus I just feel like it isn't a massive deal. Hamsters need a lot of circulation because they are ground animals. So it's best to cut the edges and lid . In the UK it's harder to get hamster cages, because in America it's easy, just get a 20 gallon tank or 360sq inches cage. But in the UK it's more :/. My cage is like 1inch below the UK standard argh, but it fits over the American so it's fine.
