Haisai!

I am Hatsushimo, real-life adventurer, Japanese-to-English translator and retired fan community administrator. I love making friends on the Internet, and this seems like a positive and well-moderated community, so I thought it would be worth making an account and introducing myself! I've given the Rules a read and am looking forward to getting to know TBT and the lovely people who participate here.

Under normal circumstances I'd be out in the world on real remote islands (I have a nomadic lifestyle IRL and spend much of my time in Okinawa prefecture, Japan), but due to the hardships engendered by the COVID-19 crisis, I elected to stay home in the United States to support my family. In the process, and especially because so many of my friends around the world play it, I've gotten quite obsessed with Atsumori/ACNH. I play the game in Japanese, so bear with me if I don't know the English script's equivalent for every term or name offhand, haha...

Out of love for the Japan I miss so dearly, I made my island and its residents sort of an homage to Japanese culture...it's a perpetual work-in-progress, but I'm really pleased with how the setting is turning out and I love my animal friends to bits. 🤍

Right now I have...
Lillian/Bunnie (based on Japanese apple rabbits)
Kabukichi/Kabuki (based on kabuki theatre)
Tokio/Cranston (based on the Japanese crested ibis, AKA "Toki")
Takoya/Zucker (based on takoyaki)
Momochi/Snake (based on ninja)
Kurobē/Ken (also based on ninja...because one wasn't enough?)
Chitose/Gladys (based on the red-crowned crane)
Shinobu/Blanche (based on the Oriental stork)
Arthur/Rory (based on the Okinawan shisa)

And I'm looking for...
My longtime favourite villager, Apollo/Apollo the ALL-AMERICAN EAGLE, as a nod to my own Philadelphian heritage. He's been my favourite since Wild World! (And yes, his name is the same in both versions.)

I've ventured to hundreds of in-game islands via the Mystery Island Tours to assemble the cast I have now, and -- partially as a self-assigned "challenge" of sorts -- I'm determined to meet Apollo on an island at long last and bring him to live with everyone in ふようか. I have a little too much fun grinding for Tanuki Miles, so I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to island-hop!

Anyway, I think I've said plenty for a self-introduction post. Thank you for reading, thank you for having me, and thank you for giving Animal Crossing fans such a nice place to congregate on the Internet!

Hello! Welcome to the forums!

Welcome to the forums!
That's cool that you're playing in Japanese. I've been switching between English and Japanese - I'm a little after N3 level so most of the game is do-able but there are still a bunch of item names that I don't know which slows things down sometimes.
And wow you have a bunch of my alternate-choices (kabuki, zucker, ken, gladys, blanche)! I love that you have so many bird villagers - they really don't get enough love.

Welcome! :) Hope you find yourself dream villager!! And I love that you put so much thought into each villager!

I have a Japan trip planned for this November but am worried it won’t be able to happen with the situation! Although I understand why it might need to be cancelled it is still a bummer!
Hope you’re enjoying your time with your family and staying healthy! :)

i’ve never seen such a comprehensive introduction! i love it haha
hope to see you around hatsushimo
よろしくね! (i hope that means what i think it means lmao)

Thank you very much for your kind praises! Yes, I love birds a lot, and many of them are heavily Japanese-themed (especially their awesome new houses!!), so it was almost an inevitability that I'd end up with a whopping 5 villagers being various avian species. Their designs are so pretty, too. Incidentally, Maguro/Freckles and Ittetsu/Admiral were among my secondary picks, but unfortunately I only have 10 slots to work with, hahaha...

And wow! That many of my villagers were in your secondary picks list, huh? I'm glad to see our tastes align!

Judging by your island...and name(s)...and villager lineup I can see that you're an avid deer fan. I spent time with the deer in Nara just last November, so while I don't have any cervids (or bovids) myself, I certainly share in your appreciation.

Thank you again for the warm welcome!

Thank you kindly for your compliment and best wishes! I'll do my ganbaribest.

Likewise, best wishes to you and your future plans of travel in Japan. While I share in the uncertainty of when, exactly, the country will be reopened to regular travellers, when the time comes I hope you can enjoy yourself thoroughly.

Hahahahaha, I guess I went a little overboard...I've been mostly been using Discord for the last few years, but I've always been a forum person as I highly prefer the slower, more focused pace. I like words! Words are our friends!!

Thank you very much for your kind welcome. There aren't a whole lot of fandom settings that still have great, active forums like this one, so it's a boon that I'm able to be here with all of you during this time.

(And you got it right! 🌸 Great job!)

I studied abroad in Tokyo a few years back but didn't get the chance to visit any of the animal hotspots on my bucketlist (fox village, Nara park, cat island, the hotsprings with monkeys, etc) so I originally called my island きつね村 and planned to make it full of wolves. But then I got Lopez in my campsite and I didn't know AC had deer since there weren't any in wild world but I fell in love with the design 😍 so I restarted 2 weeks in, and named my island after Nara to tide me over until I can finally visit the real thing 😁 IRL I prefer cats and wolves but I live in the east coast and we have TONS of deer so I love them too (I'm sure Philly is the same)

こんにちは! Welcome to TBT! What a fantastic introduction you posted. I currently only know English and Spanish, but now that I’ve learned Spanish for years, I’m looking to learn Japanese and become trilingual. Looking forward to visiting Japan sometime in the future. All your villagers are great by the way. ^^

Haha I’m looking for Apollo too, but Chevre best villager!!

ah hi i'm half-japanese! ^_^ parents never taught me japanese--i know some basics ;; ようこそ!

ベルツリーへようこそ! We're all good people here so don't be shy to talk to us! It's nice to see Snake/モモチ in someone else's town! He's kinda underrated in western towns/islands!

Hello, welcome to TBT! :)

I love how you explained the inspiration for villagers, it’s obvious you’re very knowledgable on both Animal Crossing and Japanese history - really refreshing to see!

I really hope you enjoy your time here, this forum is very welcoming and helpful and I’m sure you’ll fit right in :)

Oh, my goodness. So many responses! Thank you for your warm reception, and for your patience with my replies. I have a lot of message backlogs on different platforms, hahaha...I can't help it that there are so many wonderful people worth talking with on the Internet!

You did a great job! I can tell you've been studying hard, heheh. Please keep up the good work, and thank you so much for the thoughtful, Japanese welcome.

As to your question about Okinawa, it's lovely. My favourite place in my favourite country, which must mean it's my favourite place in the whole world! Okinawa is something of a "fusion culture" -- it was a tributary state of China for much of its history, before being gradually absorbed into Japan over the following centuries before its formal annexation into the Japanese Empire. What's more, in the aftermath of the Second World War it became the American military's primary base of operations in East Asia. As a result, Okinawan culture is in many ways an amalgam of different influences -- their indigenous island heritage coupled with the Chinese, Japanese and American influences that have shaped their identity over the course of the last millennium. The people are both easygoing and strong, the nature is breathtakingly gorgeous (if sometimes wild and dangerous!) and the cuisine is one-of-a-kind. If you're ever in Japan and have a week or so to spare in your itinerary, please visit the Ryukyu Islands!

Best wishes to your studies and to your future plans of visiting Japan, friend. Thanks again for the welcome!!

Hahaha, you flatter me. Thank you for your words and welcome. Best wishes to you in your linguistic pursuits! I only speak two languages myself, so I'm right there with you. :)

(And yes! I love my villagers a lot!)

Ah, I hope you're able to meet Apollo! And Chevre is really nice! My little brother has her in his GCN town. :)

Ah, half-Japanese! One of my best friends is too. Are you interested in learning the language someday? If nothing else, I believe it's indispensable for enriching hobbies like playing (Japanese) video games.

And thank you for your kind welcome!

Haha, I noticed that his Amiibo Card didn't sell for very much, just like Kurobē/Ken...it's a shame if he doesn't get the recognition he deserves, but I'm happy to give him some love in my town.
I hope you like it here.
Thank you very much! As a matter of fact, I already do. :)
You sound like the purest soul. We're happy to have you!
You're too kind, heheh. Thank you very much for your kind words. I adore positivity and social settings which enable it to blossom -- it was my focus as an administrator during the years I ran my own community, and indeed, even as I visit other places and meet new people, it's something I keep firmly in mind when deciding where to participate. It is my pleasure to be here.

Hello, and thank you for the welcome!

I do my best to research (and explain) everything as thoroughly as I can on my own, so I appreciate your praise of my efforts. This has been a really enjoyable game, and an impeccable creative outlet for both my love of creating video game settings and my enduring love for Japanese history and culture.

I have a feeling I'll enjoy my time here thoroughly! It's been a pleasure so far. :)
