Help with the Snapping turtle!

I spent the last few hours trying to acquire one with no luck.
Do they spawn during certain times of the day only (I thought that the occur throughout)?
Are they super rare?
I really need one as a pet for myself and a second one to donate to Blathers.

They only appear from 9pm to 4am in the river, they're a bit rare but nowhere near as bad as some of the other fish to get

They were actually my first catch of April! That’s how I figured out that bugs and fish change over before the day changes over.

I’m sure you can catch them anywhere in the river but I caught 2 while going for the golden trout up in the cliffs!

I randomly found one last night while fishing in the river. It has a pretty decently sized shadow, could possibly be mistaken for a Black Bass. I also found it in the middle of the river, so the part of there river where you fish doesn't really matter.

They have the same shadow size as the black bass, which is certain to upset you a few times. And yes, they only appear in the evening. Thankfully, I caught one on my first cast looking for the shelled specimen.

Ugghhh... still trying and it's well over 9. I even used a ton of fish bait and no luck.

Just caught my second, this time in the upper level river after 9pm. I don't think they're rare, I wasn't even trying.

One thing, when you put it in your room it sits on the floor or table by itself, it isn't in any kind of container. I'm keeping this one as a pet

Yes, that's the main reason I want one. lol...

I keep getting hundreds of eggs for the most part hence I thought of trying the bait.

Okay, I just wanted to update everyone that I got one... but it took around 20 baits.
Not sure if I was just unlucky or what.
I'm keeping this one as a pet and will donate another one to Blathers at a different time as apparently these are available for a few months.
