Well don't be scared to now, they've patched it. Unfortunately enough I did it while it was not patched and now my Pig Boris owns TWO houses and the only way to fix this is to evict him. :/

i'm not entirely sure because i avoided it when i found out you couldn't trade, but apparently you and the person adopting the villager would both have an empty plot on your islands where the villager lived and was going to live and it couldn't be filled in or moved
