If you suggest your own design, do you still unlock the items you'd get if you stuck to the theme? I'm getting bored with some of the requests being so similar but still want to unlock items

Yeah you do, if you look at the "Order" section it will show what items the villager originally wanted their home to look like and it will be added to the catalog of items.
