I got to thinking about something recently. Looking at lifetime sales of the Animal Crossing series, Wild World and New Leaf account for roughly 90% of the entire series sales, which spans 5 systems. I also noticed Club Nintendo is offering New Leaf as one of their final platinum rewards, and I saw posts here about people picking up a digital copy to have along with their cartridge version. Now, I have 4 copies already, three NA copies and a JP version. I play only one NA (the original one I had since June, 2013) and the JP one daily, so I passed on getting another- I chose Tropical Freeze instead. I stopped trying to play more than 2 towns everyday, it's too much at this point. One of the NA copies I will sell at some point in the future though.
So, given how the game is setup, you either need multiple copies or friends who play it to do everything (unlock Nookington's, get visitor/host badges, etc), and I wonder just how many like me also have multiple copies of the same game. Plus, since more handheld systems are sold than consoles, along with the difficulty of trying to create 2 towns on consoles (N64 required a second cartridge, GC required a second memory card which wasn't that bad, but the Wii was the worst since it requires a second system/television, because like the GC saved AC data can't be copied/moved, your town is stuck on the system, so no matter how many disc copies you own, only one town a system!), as well as the ease of use anytime/anywhere if this is why the handheld variants account for so much of the sales. Not to mention how those handheld variants also included many firsts for the series (at least in the West since e+ introduced a lot originally to the East).
