How Can People Do This?

At first I was going to blame interactive items...but I've got lamps and train sets outside and they never slow me down.

The stringed instruments and piano are definitely the most interesting to play. I have musical instruments all around my island. I love them. You’re probably right about the coding complexities.

....I will add though, that the mild lag doesn't bother me enough to not use the instruments :)

I find my inspiration from just not having anything to do I got in to playing last year and I piled up so many items and I wanted a higher island rating I made it to 4 stars and I have a beautiful island after a month or so of designing it took a while for a idea but it takes time and concentration hope this helped if not oof

I never thought of my island was one of those islands, but I got a lot of compliments on it. Well, the previous design of island, anyway. It is the currently under construction and barely navigable let along inspiring haha. To that, all I have to say is that I had a lot of free time last year. :p I don't typically TT since I do actually like the whole seeing your island change over a long period of time aspect of the game, but I do trade a lot. I had my Sanrio cards from New Leaf and was able to get a lot of easy trades that way. I also got really lucky with DIY recipes when the game started and was able to offer crafting services for items. Pinterest's creepy little algorithm also decided to show me Animal Crossing inspo, so that was nice of it...sorta.

The trading aspect was definitely also there in New Leaf. TBT had a whole section of the forum for it when I joined back in 2013, plus there were other sites and quite a few subreddits, too. There were even wishlist compiling sites for New Leaf. If New Leaf was as incredibly popular as New Horizons, we would have got sites like Nookazon, but Discord was only just starting to take off when New Leaf was towards the end of its peak.

As an aside, I think most people's islands are better than they think. A lot of times, it's not that someone's island is so much better than yours. It's that their island is so much different than yours. It's new. You don't see it every day and have the layout memorized by heart. Of course it's all going to be interesting.

I didn't think of my island design all at once, i just had a general idea of wanting a basic village and some natural areas, based on my new leaf town. And than i just did one area, and then another, and then incorporated the areas i done already to make it cohesive etc etc. And every time i found a good idea (farm, theater, fountain area, sky lookout, zen garden etc) i took a screenshot. And then when i found an area where the idea could work i started with putting down some basic furniture, and then Google for acnh farm for example. Then i took the ideas i liked and just incorporated it into the area i was working on.

To me it wasn't like i thought of a great idea or i have good design instincts, i just let an idea evolve and tuned colours/layouts as I go, sometimes with a bit of trial and error :)

But if you don't like designing to much you don't have to do it :) just do what you like and stop when you don't like it anymore:p

I do most of my shopping around online. I also time travel a lot so the 5 day item limit doesn’t really affect me if I want to customize ( though it would be nice if there wasn’t a limit).

I rather pay in bells or tbt or other methods. I really hate NMT trading (unless I have hem on hand). There’s nothing worse than having to wait for the ticket machine to print out the nook miles. That 2-3 second wait feels like an eternity.

For me, it comes down to boredom, time, and enjoying the planning and execution process of design projects.

Boredom - I get bored of looking at the same map after a while. I'm in the process of making my third or fourth map iteration. My previous maps were pretty dull on the terraforming front, if I do say so myself.

Time - in my previous iterations, I felt compelled to finalize my map as quickly as possible, which may have been part of the reason I ended up changing them up. This time around, I am taking my sweet time in figuring out what I want, trying stuff out, tearing it down/un-doing it if I end up disliking it. I visited multiple dream addresses to figure out what really matters to me. Through this process, ironically, I identified aspects or design choices that I disliked more so than ones I liked from the dream addresses that I visited, so I learned what I wanted to avoid doing. XD I think figuring out a not-to-do list can be just as helpful as figuring out a to-do list if you're struggling to find inspiration.

I work on a section during each session (anywhere between 15 minutes to 1-2 hours at a time), and I do what I'm in the mood for doing (e.g. terraforming, waterscaping, planting flowers/bushes, decorating villager yards, decorating beaches). I don't force myself to do something if I'm not feeling particularly inspired to do so in the moment.

Unless I'm looking for a specific unorderable item, I deal with the five item limit per day, as someone who doesn't time-travel. To me, designing isn't a race, so the limit doesn't particularly bother me.

Planning and execution process - before I started rebuilding my map, I had less than a third of it planned out in Happy Island Designer. I couldn't pin down what exactly I was hoping to get out of the remainder of the map, so I started with the third that I had a good idea of, then went with the flow for the rest of the map. Having this flexibility to adapt on-the-fly is important to me. I also enjoy the challenge of having to problem-solve on the spot when something I didn't plan for happens, and I need to work around it somehow.

I know most people are so overwhelmed when they see a lot of amazing islands and trust me I know exactly how they feel because I was in the same thought of "how did they did this?" way back in 2020 when I was still new to the game. I would say I gain a lot of understanding and skill on how to terraform since I saw a lot of tips and tricks on YouTube. So I just have to tell myself "Don't worry about others islands, just make what stands out to you"

To be honest I had doubts about how my island looked like and I felt frustrated with it. So I flatten it and by Early March 2021 I made it complete and better than ever. I am even surprised at myself how well I did it. I guess the best answer I can give is, as long as you're focused on what you make that stands out to you, you'll feel a lot more comfortable about yourself making the island the way you want and not have to worry about how others make their island. Its all about you, not them.
