how close can villager houses be in new horizons?

my town plaza is being upgraded today, so i can't buy a new plot of land to test it out, but since villager houses are on "plots" of land with space on either side, how close can they be to each other/cliffs/etc?

They can be pretty close to each other. Two of my houses have two spaces between them.

im not too sure about on the side, but in front of and behind they can have one space in between

It’s either 1 or 2 spots depending on how u look at it. One of the spots includes the front door of the house so

The back of the house can be right up against a cliff. I placed a house like that.
