How do I get a Barred Knifejaw (Fish)?

I have been fishing a lot lately just looking for this fish and I am having no luck

I need a Barred Knifejaw for the southern hemisphere turkey day ingredients and this the last item I need.

I have been looking in the ocean and nothing should I be using bait?

Medium shadow in the ocean, it's available anytime, so just keep fishing. Using bait might help in continually spawning medium size fish.

Thank you I keep getting every other fish but that one and I caught 2 new ones I didn't have haha

I find it more effective to just run along the shoreline and scare off fish that are the wrong size, rather than using bait, for catching fish in the sea. Obviously, you can use bait if you prefer staying in one spot. xD

It is a medium-small (size 3) fish, so look for a shadow of this size and scare off anything else that is too big or small.

A good way to double-check -- if you're catching things like the Dab or Blowfish, you're finding the right size of shadow.

It's Dab size, if that helps.

I caught a couple this morning.

It took me more than an hour and over 50 dabs to finally find the Knifejaw. It feels like Nintendo changed the RNG to troll us. That was the toughest of all ingredients to procure.

Yeah I spent last night getting them all but this one fish is taking forever

Try your luck on a mystery island. I got it after 3 hooks. Dab, dab, then a barred knifejaw.

I guess I got lucky because all fish that spawn were medium shadows.

I kept getting tons of red snappers or the zebra turkeyfish for life. But I basically did what @/TheSillyPuppy said, running up and down the coastline like a maniac and spinning madly at smaller or bigger fish shadows to get the specific fish shadow I needed, lol.

Anyone who was sailing past my island probably would think I was rabid.

Yeah I just kept on getting zebra turkey fish and red snappers too as soon as I get back from work I’m going to try running around like a crazy person looking for medium size haha

weirdly enough I read this thread last night, remembered I hadn't caught a barred knifejaw yet and so went and tried to catch one.. got it first try! I think this thread manifested it. I also have no advice to add beyond what everyone else has shared, but good luck!! passing on my luck haha

Yeah for some reason Barred Knifejaws have got more difficult to find recently. In Summer I kept fishing them up all the time. Took me a few days to find just one this week. One must wonder if the latest update made Turkey Day ingredients more difficult to find, 'cos It was hard getting a hold of a Mussel too.
