Pretty sure if you keep talking to him (it may take a while), you will eventually get the dialogue to convince him to stay. As for being packed for two days, I haven't played in forever and I don't remember. Looked on Google about getting villagers to stay and saw this, so it may be true:
"You have to talk to the animal until it decides to stay, or say something that implies that he or she will think about it. Then send that animal a letter in the mail with a present attached to it: it could even be just a piece of your native fruit. You have two days to do that, because they will move away two days after the first day that they have moving boxes."
