With almost 400 villagers in the game, everyone has their villagers who they invite into their islands. But my question is, how do you guys decide on who comes on the island and who doesn't? I'm talking non-dreamie of course because then it would be too easy. For me, I chose by theme. My island is city themed, and I chose a lot of bright vibrant villagers, like pudge. So how do you guys choose who you want on your island?

I choose by aesthetic and personality type initially, then invite them to my island. Whether they stay will depend on the "feeling" I get from them. E.g. do they do cute things? Do they have a nice personality? Do I have lots of positive interactions with them/nice dialogue?

And the other thing is, if I look at their house/dialogue, what are their interests?

For example, I like Poppy and Maple because they have a sweet nature theme. I like Savannah because she sings everywhere, rain or shine. She's also very sweet.

On my old island I had a forest area where I had poppy and fauna living together. I also had a section of my island for my two sporty boys.

I’m not sure how to decide who I want on my new island! Haven’t decided how I’m going to have my island this time either. I think inside their homes is something I look at, for example I ended up giving butch away because he’s a simple old soul who deserves the world but his home is an old dirt road with traffic cones etc. I really loved butch but I don’t love his house.

It depends on personality type first and then how attractive (design wise) I perceive the animal to be.

I'm most reluctant to invite snooty villagers. I have no plans for any in the forseeable future. I'd consider peppy, jock and normal but I usually only have one of each on my island. As for lazy and cranky, I love them, and don't mind 2 or 3. Smug and sisterly are great, but I'm not considering inviting any more because I already have the ones I'm very attached to.

I have a priority lane. My favorite villagers will always take the spot. Then followed by those who I am interested with. Then lastly, those who I just feel like taking in. Designs and personality don't matter as much anymore. I try to consider those that I haven't had before.

I already have my favorites on my island. So my current priorities are villagers that I am curious about, such as Kyle.

I have picked out which villagers I’d like to meet and get to know and I take in whoever I encounter first. Depending on how I will be able to connect with them during their stay, they might be a permanent resident or I might let them move after a while. I make sure I have at least two spots in my island that I keep rotating to be able to get to know as many villagers as I can.

I also choose by theme. I have some villagers that I always invite because I really love them, but this time around (with my new island) I also want to get to know new villagers like Rosie example. My island is going to have like a mystical undertone, lots of purple, yellow flowers etc. so I am going to invite villagers like Rosie or Stitches

More or less something like this

1st. I consider taking 1 of each personality at minimum.

2nd. Since I've been playing since WW release, I have at least 1 favorite from each personality....except Uchi.

3rd. I try out other villagers to decide who I like best to fill the remaining 2 spots...including any missing personalities like Uchi.

4th and final. Try not to have more than 2 of one personality. I had 3 normals once and I really hated it.

My opinion for favorite has changed on some villagers, for example:
* as of New Horizons, Carmen is my top favorite Peppy.
* I don't really like Uchi personality or designs, but I think Fuchsia is ok, and I do like her house.

Right now, my second town is kept at 8 villagers. This is the perfect number for me. It gives me more free space in my town, and makes it easier to decide who lives there. For my primary town, as of this year, I use the last 1-2 spots to freely hold random villagers or cycle specific ones in and out for others.

Its really hard when its just 10 spaces... I think if there was 15 I would be able to have all my favorites and even maybe 2 spaces to rotate. I just made a hard decision and removed someone and I am island jumping but theres 3 villagers I would like to have for that spot..

I just started playing a month ago so I don't think I even have a full 10 villagers yet but I invite villagers from campsite basing on personality and/or how much I like their facial designs. But Moose is an exception (I didn't really like his up&down unibrow) and I wanted to kick him out for about as long as I've played but I just recently started liking him. So I guess the thing is for villagers already on my island I keep, and for the ones on the campsite I invite depending if I like their designs.

I would say i pick by dreamies. All 10 of my villagers are my permanent choices. They would have been amiibo’d in regardless

For more themed islands which i do enjoy doing on the side i have specific dreamies for those as well. It usually goes by island theme who would fit that and then narrow it down to who i think is the cutest out of those.

I personally go a lot by appearance, but I look into personality as well. I want to have at least 1 villager of every personality.

I normally go with appearance and see if they fit my island.

But I really let anyone come stay if I then see I don’t at all like their personality then I don’t have them.

Cause I don’t like the angry types or ones that seem negative

Before I got the game, I planned on getting all of my NL favorites plus a few others that I was interested in. Once I got the game and became active here again, I began to slowly become interested in other villagers like Sherb and Raymond; at first I had no interest in any of the new villagers. The villagers’ design is what I’m interested in the most. My favorites still get priority — my top favorites get permanent spots though I have been considering changing out some - at least the ones that I have amiibo cards for. After that, it is based on design and how much I like them, or based on past experience. I let Dom move out but I think I want to invite him again now that I’ve seen more of his expressions; plus I forgot to summon him to Harv’s studio.

I wanted to leave two spots for cycling but I either keep finding my dreamies or villagers I don’t have an amiibo card for and who I ended up liking. Not sure how much longer I will keep playing the game though so what I have now may be it.

I just pick ones I like. At first, I planned to pick permanent villagers and I felt SO much pressure to get PERFECT ones. But then I realized the few perfect ones I had, though I absolutely loved them, I got eventually got bored of. So I finally decided to play the game more like previous games- moving out villagers after a time. The time frames vary depending on villagers, but this way I frequently get to enjoy that "villager honeymoon" period and I also get to rotate through villagers I like. The exact villagers vary, I just go for ones I like, but I often have one picked out before I move someone out (then I come on here to find them!).

I REALLY appreciate the control this game gives us over our villagers. I know people complain about the Nook Miles islands, and the randomness, and I admit it's not ideal. But it's so much more control than we've had in ANY previous main series game that I love it!

I always used to base it on just which designs and personality types I liked/wanted. But now it's all about what their house exterior looks like and if it will fit my island

Since my island has no specific theme, just ideas and aesthetics that I really like, choosing my villagers was not too hard, because in the beginning of the game I had no set list of which 10 villagers I wanted permanently. At first, I invited villagers I love such as Agnes, Shep, Henry and Drift, but as my island began to have more and more shape I deviated from just strictly inviting my favorites and I started to experiment and give other sorts of villagers a chance. It all began when I got into island hopping for the very first time (I spent long hours into the night just using up all the NMTs I could get) and found Carrie the normal kangaroo <3 she was the first villager to really make me consider trying out new species as I never had a kangaroo I loved more than Walt. She's been living in my island Magicant ever since our fateful encounter.

I then invited Ken, and he's been a great addition. What appealed to me the most was his deep black/blue colors and cute red blush (I think round pink/red circles on the cheeks is a classic feature for Animal Crossing villagers to have) to me, looks are pretty much everything when it comes to villagers, then secondly their house exterior/interior (this says a lot about them and gives each villager a more unique vibe) and lastly their personality/hobby.

Having villagers with varied shapes and colors is another thing I really like. Anteaters, mice, sheep, alligators and elephants... purple, green, black, blue, pink... I enjoy variety!

I wanted to have at least one villager per personality and I made my list based on villager I have previously known about with half of them male and half female. Since figuring their personalities out, I found that my list had 2 snooty and 2 jocks. I then decided to roll with it, since I found my list perfect.

I choose them by theme also. I wanted to do a gloomy sort of theme, so I chose Grey/black villagers ( Kurt, rodeo, nan, Mathilda, Raddle, Cole, Agnes, Avery, Roscoe). I also like that those villagers mentioned do not have visible smiles.

The house exteriors are also important. I don’t want colorful houses.
For example, Kiki would of been a great choice for my island, but her house is so orange. It just didn’t really fit among the others.

I choose villagers who match my current theme. I keep some favorite villagers and cycle new villagers in and out. Right now, I have 5 new to me villagers whose photos I will try to earn: Walker, Miranda, O'Hare, Peanut, and Velma. I found Walker and Miranda on mystery islands and invited the other 3 with Amiibo cards.
