How does switch profile transfer work with new horizons safe data?

I currently play with a character I made on my roommate's switch/island. I plan on getting my own switch, and I'd love to be able to move my money/items to my new character. I know that save data can't be transferred, but my question is this: once I get my switch and transfer my profile, will the character on my roommate's switch still be there? Or will I lose all that progress?

It will still be there. The data is saved to the switch not the profile. If you plan on deleting your account from the switch make sure to delete your character on the game as well before doing so c:

(Note I'm only guessing as someone deleted a profile from their switch but still had the player character in their town)

Your character on your roommates Switch will stay on your roommates Switch. It will not transfer to your Switch. On your switch, you will need to start a new island and character.
