How Does Thread-Subscription Work?

Hello! Relatively new here, and very glad I decided to join TBT. The interface is gorgeous, the users friendlier than I've ever encountered on any other forums. One thing that I still haven't figured out yet, though, is how the subscription to threads work...?

I know that if you click on Advanced Options (or the like) at the bottom of the page, you can choose to subscribe to a thread, as well as customize whether you're notified from the "Control Panel" or via email.

Where exactly is the control panel? I've tried subscribing to the thread, but it didn't notify me through the notification bar on the top of the page... It gets a little annoying having to bookmark the page and going to it each time I want to check for replies.

If you click on "Settings" at the top of the forum, or alternatively just head over to this link you will be able to see a list of all the threads you are subscribed to. They will show up in a bold font if they have new posts, similar to threads listed on forum pages.
