How Large Is Too Large?

I want to change my avatar and banner and set. I have already chosen the avatar I want and I have it resized and everything, but I'm stuck with choosing a banner, mostly because I don't know how big can I make it in terms of filesize.

The TBT rules say that:

Additionally, make sure the file sizes of any images in your signature are not too large; this causes pages to load slowly.

But to be honest, I don't know how much is too much. I don't really know much about this stuff so I can't make a decision based on that ^^;.

The banner I want is this:

I can ask someone to make the height 250 pixels or less. It's file size is around 500 KBs, so that could be a problem for me if it is too big and I will need to ask a Photoshop ninja to lower it for me ^^;

I think mainly that means the compression and size in bytes of the given image. The image you have there is only 475 kb, which is hardly a drop in the pond for anyone with even moderately fast internet speeds, but still could slow down a little. I managed to size your image down a tad, to make it even faster, here it is.

Just a heads up, the signature, as defined by the Bell Tree is ALL the text and images used under the signature line. So if you chose for your image to be 250 pixels tall, you would only be able to have one line of text under it.

Kaiaa: Thanks for the heads up ^^. I want to keep at least the two last lines of my signature.

I found another version of the image I want as a signature. It's much smaller but much bigger in filesize than the previous one... I don't understand computers x.X.

Can you tell me as a mod if this can be considered too big? Maybe I will just settle for an static image after all ^^.
