I'm hoping for 12 since when you add in the 8 playable characters it comes to 20 which is a nice number. We haven't heard anything yet though but I would like to find out
How many animal villagers can we have?

That's a major disappointment if true.
I won't be playing locally with anyone, so it would have been really appreciated if I had been able to place villagers in their place.
I wish they weren't so restrictive with villager numbers, let space be more of an organic limiter. I'm sure people would be able to decide for themselves how many villagers they thought was appropriate.
