How often do villagers wear custom designs from Ables shop wall?

I had several friends over yesterday, then we did a round-robin and visited each others' islands. It was fun, got a lot of shopping done, and had a chance to "hang out" with RL friends, despite the quarantine.

When I got back to my island, I noticed that one of them had put a dress up on the wall in Ables. I didn't report it, because it wasn't offensive; it was actually cute, but I did take it down, as it doesn't fit my island and I don't want my villagers to start wearing it. I replaced it with a transparent tunic design, because it was all I had.

What are the odds that my villagers will start wearing that blank I had to put up? I'm particular about what my villagers wear, so this really bothered me.

I can only speak from my experience but I have two custom clothes pieces hanging out in the store and it took me about a week for 8/10 of my villagers to be wearing one of them. It spread like wildfire honestly. I have no tangible proof but I suspect every villager has an outfit slot (like how they have pyjamas and work out gear etc.) for a custom outfit and they will try to fill it up ASAP. It definitely felt like they were intentionally trying to fill some kind of outfit slot. Again, I have no data on this besides the fact how quickly it happened for me.

Many of the animals who picked the designs up never even went inside Able sisters. They would just suddenly swap in to the design, so even if my theory is completely wrong they still definitely pick up custom designs fast.

As of today, every single one of my villagers continues to occasionally wear my customs.

If you're worried about the blank I would personally put up a custom design head piece. I've never heard of villagers wearing custom hats and villagers rarely keep hats on for long periods of time. Maybe you could find some cute pre-made hat design and put it in the slot so if they somehow do pick it up it won't be as bad if they temporarily wear it.​

So far I’ve only had three villagers wear my designs and I have all the slots filled. I’ve seen Drago and flurry wearing the jack skellington sweater I made and Bangle was wearing the Tardis dress one morning but that’s it and it was only one time each

They do put custom hats, I don't have the photos but in my old save file I put some custom hats for my friends (who didn't have the Able sisters yet) to get, and.... suddenly my hats were everywhere ^^U

I hope Imbri sees this! I have no idea how to stop villagers from wearing custom stuff if hats aren't safe either. Did they permanently wear the hats or just for short periods of time?​

Just from time to time luckily! I think that just one character, Lucky, had his hat for a full day. But I still suffered because hats on some models don't look good at all imo ;u;

The normal and lazy types wear custom designs a lot. Chevre wears them more often. My friend, the
history buff, made a WWI uniform, and Chevre couldn't wait to put it on .

Don't do that !! It's what I did a while ago to try and stop the spread of custom designs and they all started wearing it ! And complaining to Isabelle does NOT remove hats...
Sadly there is absolutely nothing to do. I've changed the custom designs on display with dress models so that at least my male villagers stay out of it.

Most of my female characters have been wearing one of my custom dresses that I made. I wore it for ages until I found clothes that I liked so I'm wondering if it's also to do with that. - Purely because I have another custom design and nobody has worn that one.
