I feel like there isn't enough storage in ACNL. It's one of my biggest complaints for the game. So I'm really hoping they make big changes for the Switch version. I was thinking about this today and this is how I wish it would work:

Pockets:
Have a toolbox where all your tools go. I hate that I have to use my mail to store tools right now, otherwise they just take up too much pocket space. It's just super inconvenient the way it is right now. The toolbox can just go into the corner beside the mail button.

I think that 20 would be a good amount of pocket slots. Fruits and bells should auto stack when you pick them up so you don't have to keep pausing to do it manually. Then my idea is to have backpack/purse items that you actually wear. This will be like an inventory upgrade, except it only adds to your pocket space when in use. I don't usually need a lot of pocket space in my daily routine in my town. But on days where I am landscaping or decorating my house, I tend to ALWAYS run out of space. So whenever I am planning to be carrying around a lot more stuff, I will put on a backpack which will add another 20! Then when I don't need it anymore, it can just be dropped off at home as a cute looking item, ready to be used next time.

Bicycle:
I really want bicycles in the new game since I think it would be really adorable (Imagine riding around in one and you put a helmet on as you pedal, ringing your bell - lol). You could add a basket to it and that will act as another storage of maybe 20 slots. Kind of like my backpack idea, but you just park it outside instead of inside the house, so it's probably better suited to store some landscaping items.

Pattern Storage:
You should be able to access 20 patterns from your menu instead of 10. I like keeping my favourite outfits in these slots but they're always used up by the paths. Then the storage at the Able Sisters should hold at least 200. You can put the patterns that you used for paths in the storage if you want, without having them get changed/deleted in the town. If you customize some furniture with your own pattern, you should be able to delete it or store it without the furniture reverting back to original form.

Storage Furniture:
I think that there should be at least 6 category pages, so like A, B, C, D, E, F (better if you can label these yourself), then have 150 slots for each page. I don't know about you guys, but I like to store the clothes I love to wear in my storage furniture, but I always run out. Even if you don't use your storage this way, I still think that this amount/system will be beneficial to anyone's play style.

The fridge items should be a separate storage. Similar to Stardew Valley, I would love to keep all my food items in the fridge. There are so many cute drinks and dishes in the game that I like to sometimes switch out every now and then from displaying in my kitchen/dining room. It just doesn't make sense that I'd open a fridge and there would be clothing and furniture in there. Fridges can probably have less storage space than regular storage furniture, but I always think the more, the better. Things you can put in here are fruits, any food/drink items, and even the ingredients that you get from the Thanksgiving event like flour and sugar, etc. If cooking is implemented in the Switch game, this is where you pull ingredients out of automatically when you're trying to cook!

Secret Storage Alternative:
The secret storage was added for the Welcome Amiibo update, and although it was very much appreciated, I still think that it is most definitely NOT enough storage for the amount of non-orderable items/collectibles in the game. I really think that there should honestly be at least 5x the amount of storage that they gave you for the secret storage. But my idea is that maybe, if there is another Main Street (or whatever version they have in the Switch game), there will be an unlockable building there that is kind of like a U-Haul Storage Unit building (but with a much cuter name obvs). This is how it will work:

+ When it first opens, you get 100 storage slots. The requirement to unlock this should be relatively easy.
+ Then the next upgrade, you get 350 slots. This should be a little harder to obtain. This is around the same size as the secret storage available in New Leaf now. This is the level that you will kind of be stuck with for a while.
+ The next upgrade will be unlimited storage, and to unlock this, the requirement would be on the level of completing your museum/encyclopaedia. This way, it doesn't feel cheap. Unlimited storage shouldn't just be given to the player, but it should be a reward that is earned and incentivises the player to do a certain task for this amazing reward.

This storage can only be accessed in that building and will feature a search function.

What do you guys think of my ideas? I've never seen anyone really go in depth and create their own ideas for how storage should be handled in the game so I thought I'd do it :)

I have always wanted a toolbox for my tools. So I love that idea.
The bicycle with the basket would be super cute and helpful, as well.

I hoard so much in Animal Crossing, so I am very open to all storage I can get. I just want a way to search my storage quicker. I sometimes lose stuff in storage, so anything to help that would be amazing.

I agree! That's why I said that we should able to label our own categories! And a search function should be available (just like in the catalogue).

Pockets:
I can honestly relate to you're pocket issue because I get annoyed by the same thing and honestly I would LOVE it if we had a separate took box type thing to hold the tools. I do disagree with the idea of auto stacking fruits. It may just turn into the opposite problem: having to un-stack every fruit before you use it may seem just as tedious. And instead of money auto stacking together I'd rather it just automatically go into your wallet unless that's full. But the idea of added storage via-purse or backpack I think that's an amazing idea. But I can see one issue with multiple areas of storage on the character, which would be how would they implement being able to flip through your pockets with the D-pad.

Bicycle:
This is some cute ****, 10/10

Storage Furniture:
You also have a lot of great ideas for storage furniture. Some people suggest the separation of different storage units but I think that would be the worst solution because having to go through so many different furniture items just to find one thing sounds annoying and tedious. So I think this solution because it doesn't get rid of a connected storage space it just makes it bigger. And much like you, I also separate items in my storage.

Fridges I do think can be used as disconnected storage space because food isn't always needed on the fly but simply for immersion purposes I would enjoy having a place to put my food. If they do add cooking (which I would love) it would be a great opportunity.

SSA:
This is certainly an interesting solution that you've come up with, and I do see the benefit from it. However I don't think unlimited storage space should be an option, mainly because technically wise (I'm not a game dev nor do I know how to program) but I don't know how well the game could handle that level of storage.

Comments:
storage space is always a hot topic when talking about AC, mainly because once you play for a long time you just never have enough. However sometimes I wonder if that's necessarily a bad thing, whats the value in hoarding a whole bunch of stuff you may not use. But I also like the idea of a far larger storage space because it could give you more opportunity to gather collections and whatnot.

Aaaah, search function. That would save me so much time. I do -try- to organize my drawers, but there are times when I can't remember where I put somethin, secret storage or regular.

Also, I want out secret storage and regular to be linked, so that when we got to different towns, we don't have to be like 'oh lol left it in my other drawers'.

I really like the backpack idea, which could work like Jingle's sack. When we take it off, it goes in our pockets. The auto stacking would also really help.

In anticipation of the new game, I expect to hoard ALOT of stuff in the begining, so I'm gonna need all the storage I can get.

Just wondering when you would need to unstack your fruits? If you were to plant it, you can just click and say "Plant 1." Genuinely curious as I can't think of any reason I would unstack my fruits besides planting lol. And I definitely agree with the idea that bells SHOULD automatically go into your wallet. I suppose I should have mentioned that it's for if your wallet is full or if that isn't what we end up getting in the next game. I'd just rather not have to stack them myself ^_^

I also wouldn't want separation for every single storage unit. I would get super confused with that. And then it would be a nightmare if you accidentally sold one. Plus you probably wouldn't be able to put that furniture in your pocket until you removed everything inside anyway. Yikes!

And yep, I'm super excited about my bicycle idea too ^_^ If only I could just will it into existence!

For unlimited storage, I think it could definitely work. I think Link has unlimited item inventory in BotW (except for weapons/armour). Then again, I'm not a game dev so I don't know if it would have the same rules. I could also settle for at least 2000 storage slots as the final upgrade. I don't think unlimited storage is totally necessary to be honest, but it would just be nice to have the knowledge that I would never run out and the space is there if I need it. The game has a crazy amount of furniture/clothes/collectibles that are super rare and cannot be ordered anymore. For my sanity and peace of mind, I would just prefer not to have to get rid of these items, ever. Another alternative is to just make EVERYTHING orderable except for milestone items like the sapling clock, etc. But everything else should be orderable, maybe even from a separate catalogue that you get later in the game just so that it still feels special (think like getting the ATM but a special catalogue for those exclusive items you normally wouldn't have been able to get from the regular catalogue).

A backpack! I can always put a lot of stuff in a backpack

extra secret storage spaces.

Riding a bicycle around town sounds nice.
Speaking about stacking flowers, can we make a bouquet of flowers for villagers as well? (as a gift XD)

Tutupu gets all the flowers. She is best bear.

Yes, I've always wanted flowers to stack into a bouquet! Would be a nice gift and maybe if you give it to them in person, you can actually see them walking around with it for a while! :D

I don't know if this is just a "me" thing but I can't leave fruits on the ground, I hate the way it looks, but if you were to give a villager a fruit you'd have to un-stack them as well. However I do think that they would just add an "give 1" option to the villager, so you may have a point there.

and yes I never though of it before but BOTW link does have unlimited space with all food and crafting items so I guess it wouldn't be too much of an issue (maybe?). I do think they would have to add some sort of searching aspect to it though. Maybe they could add like an online storage space like the pokebank (though you do have to pay for storage.)

These ideas are great and I would love to see all of them in AC Switch! I agree with everyone else, the bicycle idea is beyond adorable <3

Working on my town and it got me thinking how much the pattern storage bothers me too, so I added a section for it. Lol

Ah, I would so love to have functional backpacks! That would be so cute! Also, I do agree with the limited storage space. I love a lot of the clothing in the current game New Leaf, but I feel like I would be running out of room to put them all in, especially if they add new clothing in the next game. Plus, I like to keep extra fruit and other items that I need and I like to keep all the rare items I obtain in the events, but I feel like there just isn't enough room for all that, even with the secret storage. I really don't want to create a secondary character just to hold all my stuff, so better storage would be nice. I love all your ideas, even the bike one! :D

That may be fixed since HHD has eight pages worth of design storage for patterns for a total of 120 tiles at 15 a page
