how to get rid of displayed clothing in villager houses? 😭

so! like a non-flying dodo, i gifted a clothing item (patchwork coat) to a villager (murphy) without checking that it fit his style or colors. (though, c'mon, who would have thought he, a patchwork green bear cub didn't like GREEN? just can't!)

anyways, the point is, he wore it for a hot second, and then took it off and put it on display in his house - BUT somehow managed to duplicate it and now has TWO coats on display in his house??? thereby ruining the beauty of it, imo. my attempts to replace either of the coats thus far, have just replaced the single torch in his house, and then the items themselves.

my question is - does anyone have any good item replacement tricks for this?
OR have you noticed villagers WITHOUT any closets-type items tend to display clothing you give to them AND has gifting them a closet item fixed this at all?

any advice appreciated ☠

Hello! My recommendation is to ask talk to Isabelle about the villager. That's just what I think, it could reset it.

You have to gift them some items to fix it. When you do, they start wearing that item. Also, you can go to Harv's Island and check if your items fit their look. o:

@Munyo he said he already tried doing that, but it simply just replaced the other items, still leaving one of the coats. But I agree, going to Harv's island to check it a great idea.

Oh yes, you have to keep gifting them items to get rid of it. It's a little redundant, but that's how it works. :c

isabelle only temporarily resets what the villager is wearing or resets their catchphrase back to normal, so that doesn't help, sadly! murphy won't wear either of the coats, just keeps them on display in his house

and okay! sighs! i will continuously gift. does gifting more than one thing a day increase your odds of it replacing multiple items in the house - not just the same one, do you know?

Try gifting him 1-tile items so he replaces the clothes with said items and the clothes get stored in his wardrobe instead, where he'll actually wear them!

yeah, that's what i've been doing! and why i asked the question about villagers without closet furniture, because he doesn't have a closet/wardrobe etc. so maybe if i gift him a closet item??

That's exactly what I'm going to try with all my villagers who don't own a closet lol

really frustrating game mechanic tbqh!!
