A question that popped into my head walking by mostly American-owned fast food chains on my way home.

How would you cope eating only your country's traditional diet 100 years ago?

For me, not so well! The traditional British diet was very bland and something I realised I don't cook at all. I primarily cook Italian, Mexican, Indian, Chinese, and Japanese recipes at home.

I believe i would rather drink a glass of dish soap opposed to traditional British food, whether it be today or 100 years ago.

While not my favorite dishes, I think I'll be doing alright if I have access to all of the countries recipes. 1924 isn't that far off in time. Now if I was stuck with only regional food I would quickly stop considering eating one of the few pleasant things in life...

Sure thing, I'm not that picky of an eater. I mean I'd eat bugs if I was lost in the wilderness and had nothing else to eat, lol. Coincidentally, the few foods and drinks I do dislike are all ones lots of people love, which I find to be funny.

At a quick glance it seems like the American diet ~100 years ago was a lot of meat, seafood, and potatoes, which poses a slight problem for me, seeing as out of those options, I only eat potatoes. 💀 But apparently the 1920s was kinda when modern vegetarianism started to take off too! So I might be able to get by after all. Peanuts were the popular meat alternative at the time, and while I don't eat them super often presently, I like them enough!

I'm in the same boat as Meri. I believe Americans relied heavily on meat in that time. They kind of still do, at least in my area. I'm sure I could make do, but it wouldn't be ideal.

My diet would consist mainly of potatoes, a bit under half of my diet, milk, about a fifth, about 30% grain, a bit of groceries, and hardly any meat. We were still coming out of famine times and British rule, so we were in the fall-out of the 1916 Rising. Our country was still in a state of overall poverty until around the 1970?* maybe, but I think I'd be fine with the diet to be honest. I'm not a picky eater, and don't bored of food that easily. I reckon I'd be fine.

*btw if someone has a correction on my history/timeline, I'd appreciate it. I've never been the best at history, but I'm fairly certain I got it right for the most part.

My diet would be awesome! Probably better than now, lol.

My family all lived in south Louisiana in 1924, cajun country. So whatever cajun food was invented by then, that's what I'd be eating. Maybe a gumbo made out of whatever animal they caught. 😅

But still, better than all the processed junk we have now. Almost tempted to ditch the "modern" food and just eat what my great grandmother would have served.

I'd probably be fine, although I'd miss Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Indian food very much.

I'd be fine, I do eat a lot of meat and potatoes so I don't feel like it would be much of a struggle for me. I would miss the other food options of course but I wouldn't be miserable and hungry all the time.

I’d probably eat mainly chicken. I’m not sure how available my favorite seafood is but they have fish in the Great Lakes so I’d probably try those.
I bet I’d be healthier, since there probably wasn’t much junk food back then.

Sure, I’d like to think so. I like meat and potatoes. If there was also seafood I’m good with that too because I love seafood.
