Hello! In attempting to grow hybrids, I've learned a few things, and figured I'd share them here!

1. Hybrids no longer grow on the beach like they did in previous games.
You can store flowers there if you don't want them to breed new flowers (to narrow the possibilities)

2. Water all flowers that you might want hybrids from.
I was only watering three sets of flowers, and that yielded no hybrids. I've seen people talk about watering SEVERAL flower sets and getting up to eight hybrids a day, as opposed to one or two, and random spawns around the island.

Hybrid Planting Layouts
This page can offer more info on possible spacing.

You can place hybrids in the same pattern. This is necessary for breeding certain flowers (see chart below)

There are a few different layouts and they are as follows:

X = Flower O = Open space

Standard 3x3 X Pattern:
X O X
O X O
X O X

This one is ideal for starting hybrids as it's a more focused area!

Expanded X Pattern:

X O X O X O X
O X O X O X O
X O X O X O X

Also a focused area, this one can be as big or small as you may want

I would use the X pattern for flowers that require two different flower colours.
Eg: red and yellow tulips
R = Red, Y = Yellow, O = Open
R O R O R O R
O Y O Y O Y O
R O R O R O R

This same X pattern can be used for flowers of the same colour, or transition to different ones as follows:
R = Red, Y = Yellow, W = White O = Open
O W O W O W O
R O R O R O R
O R O R O R O
R O R O R O R
O Y O Y O Y O

This allows the possibility of two types of hybrids to spawn at once! Black tulips in the RxR spaces, Orange in the RxY ones and Pink in the RxW ones!

A Variation on the X Pattern:
X O O X
O X X O
X O O X

This pattern is ideal when looking for multiple hybrids at once:

R = Red, Y = Yellow, W = White, O = Open
Y O O W
O R R O
Y O O W

This pattern allows the possibility of three different hybrid types to spawn at once!

Best of luck!

Thank you so much! My flowers seem to only breed when it rains :V lol not sure if its the amount of water they are getting or if it's just the fact that each and every flower gets some. Thanks for sharing :)

That's so interesting, I've been placing my flowers in the O's instead of the X's since I started playing New Leaf! Wondering if I need to scoot them all around now in NH
