i just made such a huge mistake im so ashamed of myself😭

antonio wanted me to change his catchphrase. since i did the great catchphrase purge about a year ago i wasnt planning on changing it, especially because his catchphrase is my favorite.
then i clicked THE DREADED first option.
there was no way to cancel and i was completely blanking on catchphrase ideas so i finally settled on "GONNNN!!!" (with that many exclamation points) based off the scene in the anime hunter x hunter where leorio sees gon again
i'm already sweating in dread at the thought of my island undergoing another catchphrase apocalypse

I think... if you select to change it, retype what they're current catchphrase is and they'll acknowledge that you didn't want it to change. I believe I did that once.

Report it to Isabelle, and complain about the way he talks to reset it. Although I think it'll reset the nickname, greeting AND catchphrase of said villager.

Can confirm this, had to do this to my entire island's population because of one 3AM tiredness joke of making Skye say something, uh, not PG13. By end of the week, it spread like the plague. <_<

Confirming what @Rosch said. My mom once accidentally changed the catchphrase of Antonio too and I was able to reset it back to the standard on the same day and there was no spreading around

I can confirm this. I always retype what they say, and they’ll acknowledge you didn’t want to change it. I’m not creative at all with coming up with catchphrases or nicknames, so this option works well for me.

And sometimes you mean to change the catchphrase, but only for one villager and not the whole island. After hearing Fang call me by a cutesy nickname that a normal villager gave me, I felt so awkward that I am making villagers just call me by my name only to avoid this very situation.
