I love this game but......

With every update they’ve folded in new dialogue for all of the villagers, there’s no reason to think they’ll stop anytime soon.
That's cool, I didn't know that. The start-of-the-day dialogue really drowns these things out.

As for making sure you have every personality type, yes, this will give you access to the maximum of dialogue, but you’ll always miss out on some: there is special dialogue you only hear in conversation between two villagers of the same character type, so unless you cycle through doubles of every type, you’ll always miss some dialogue.

And if you don’t like the dialogue of one particular character type (COUGH Jocks ), why subject yourself to it? I’d rather hear my multiple snooties tell me I look fabulous again than hear about how sweaty some animal is...
You make a good point. I usually liked all the villager types enough to want at least one, but I might skip one in NH now. They really did focus Jocks, Lazies and Peppies in particular too hard on their one interest (working out, bugs/sleeping, pop stars).

Yeah, I was really hoping for (although not expecting) good dialogue in NH and I find what we have now fairly disappointing. I love NH, but the characters feel so flat. I think WW is the peak of the series in terms of dialogue; it was tamer than GC, more entertaining than NL/NH, and it had the special character episodes! The hobbies the villagers would alternate between were great, too! I remember in my most recent WW town my villagers all felt different, like I remember Bree was really into collecting white furniture, Queenie loved fossil hunting, and Purrl was into catching bugs, and that set them all apart for me even though they were all snooty. Now they'll perform cute little actions and carry things around the island, but they never talk about them, which is disappointing. I remember the villagers in WW liked to gossip about other villagers being couples or whatever as well, and I thought that was cute. Also, even though it's nice that villagers have conversations with each other more often now than in NL, I find them all pretty bland and not as funny as the ones in prior games.

However, I do think NH is better than NL for dialogue - as sick as I am of hearing Diva's way-too-long dialogue about her dinosaur dream every day, I'd take that over hearing 'hey, did you know fruit can stack in your inventory?' and 'did you know you can press this button to switch your tools more easily?!' for years in NL any day. Although I think they ruined the lazy personality in NH with being bug obsessed and disgusting, I like the new peppy and smug dialogue better than in NL.

I think it'd be great if they added special dialogue for villagers depending on their talents and goals. Even if they just let them talk about the instrument they're currently playing or what they're going to do with the bundle of sticks they're carrying, it'd be a huge improvement. I'd love it if they brought back the special character episodes, too!

I agree that they need to make villagers more complex, but personally I don't see a difference between their behavior in NL and NH. Maybe I just haven't played NL in a while, but I remember having a lot of repeat conversations with my villagers, just as much as I do in NH. I also feel like they gave more individuality to villagers in NH, for example in NL I had Ankha and Freya in my town, and they were pretty much identical. But in NH, I have Judy and Ankha, and although they are both snooties they are pretty different from each other. That being said, I agree that they need to do more to make villagers more complex because they seem very "flat" right now. I also miss quests and some rude dialogue (lol). Even though in NL I found quests annoying, I really miss it in NH, without it villagers feel less interactive. I also miss being able to "accidentally" piss off your villagers and getting rude dialogue because in NH they are so nice to you all the time, which is great, but I'd appreciate some variety lol.

When the new update came, I think new dialogue was added but it made Claude worse? He literally only says the 1 new line they taught him over & over again every single day. He's even more broken now.

I love the game, but this is one of my main issues with it as well. I didn't play NL, so I don't have that point of comparison, but it just feels like the dialogue/friendship system should be more advanced by now. Crafting and terraforming are great, but in a lot of ways, the core gameplay has not evolved much since the first game was released on GameCube almost 20 years ago.

hadn't noticed the dialogue much before, but the started trying to get the framed photos and they do get better the higher you get in friendship

YESSS. They weren't as mean as GC but still had a little spice to them! Oh my gosh even if they brought back hobbies, it would be amazing. It made the villagers feel so different! The hobbies were so varied and really made things exciting.

Yeah, with villagers starting conversations with contextual stuff before anything else, villagers with the same personality will tend to say the same things. Even without the same personality, villagers tend to talk about the same stuff too much. Like the week of the bug off, every one of my villagers kept talking about how it was on Saturday and how they're excited. Every. Single. Day. I tend to not talk to my villagers anymore because of this.

There was a time where I tried to get past the contextual stuff by talking to them a bunch, but they just stopped wanting to talk to me and got the squiggles above their head before I could even get through to the more personal stuff.

I think the villagers would be much better if they just lessened the contextual dialog.

Beyond a few variances in dialogue trees, they are the same. You form connections to their appearance, activities, and reactions to differentiate between them. I’m surprised you aren’t used to it by now, I just shrug it off. To me, for instance, it’s funny when my two peppies both talk about being the most popular resident on the island and seem unaware that the other thinks so. I think there are ways to similarly head-canon a lot of mechanics like this. Because there’s zero evidence the game will change completely how dialogue works, so effort has to come from the player (and with 400 or so possible villagers, it is unrealistic to ever expect varied differentiation for every one)

They don't have anything different between them to form connections. I'm not used to it because past games weren't that way (besides NL). We shouldn't get used to things and not expect more from a billion dollar company! I remember it was mind blowing just to place furniture outside and that seems like something that should've always been a feature. I feel like many fans are used to not expecting much. 400 characters.... yeah I get that..... 5 other people said the same thing. It's definitely doable and considering how much time between games Nintendo had it's not unheard of. They could've scaled down the amount of villagers to make it possible as well. In past games they used sneaky ways of making each villager unique by implementing hobbies. They also didn't repeat as much across personalities. Asking for more variation is setting our expectations low already.... that's really not asking much. They could vary between species too to make things a little more interesting.

Yes I think this would definitely help! I thought contextual conversation would stop after getting to know them better :/

This is a huge, huge gripe with the game for me too. When I do talk to my villagers (which is not very often now because I just can’t take all the repeat incidental dialogue) I end up just mashing through everything they say most of the time. :[ The villager interactions need a serious overhaul but I’m not very optimistic that they’ll get it.

I had three peppy villagers on my island a while ago (Ruby, Penelope, and Peanut) and the repeat dialogue was crazy! I have a video somewhere of me talking to all three in a row, and each of them saying the line about running around and screaming to wake themselves up!

You know it's bad when I know exactly which line you're referring to.... LOL.

Ugh I hate that :( It's the same for me nowadays.... I'm trying to keep the hope! I think it just needs to be talked about more.

I have several villagers at a high enough friendship to count for the achievement and they STILL have the same dialogue they had since they moved to my island (provided I can get through all the pointless fossil/money talk). When are these elusive higher friendship conversations supposed to happen? After I got five pictures of them?

I’m hoping that one day, Nintendo will put in a patch to make things more interesting with the dialogue. Unfortunately, I don’t think things like that usually get a patch :(

Snooty and Cranky were done much better in nl. They were not super friendly but also not very rude, just a little distant in the start. I don't like the snooty personality as much in this game. Same with lazy, they sometimes say the strangest stuff and not in a "haha that is weird but funny and kinda cute" way, no it is just plain weird and even gross sometimes. That might be harsh to say about lazies, but it is how i feel so sorry XD

I know a lot of people are commenting that start of the day dialogue is really reptitive and once you mash through it the dialogue gets better and yes, I agree to an extent, but I've never had that issue in other AC games. Mix in that dialogue with their other options, don't tell me about digging holes and placing paths every single day.

Older games had personality types and some repetitive dialogue but the nice thing was that there were so many other dialogue options in the pool simply because requests were mixed in. There was definitely a drop off in the dialogue with NL, and it's an issue just as glaringly obvious in NH as well. They most certainly expanded some of the things Isabelle says in the morning since launch, so there's no reason for them to not consider expanding villager dialogue in the future.

Without the slightly more complex or even just diverse options for dialogue in this game it really takes out a lot from the villager friendship aspect. I don't feel nearly as attached to favs in this game as I did in older one. I felt that was in NL as well. As much as the new games are so great in terms of mechanics and gameplay, it's hard to not miss the flavor the old games had since the town aspect was so much more enjoyable.

I have been one of said people during new leaf that wanted more interesting dialogue and I agree it is much worse in new horizons! I don’t really talk to my villagers unless I want to increase friendship points with them tbh. Even with all of the Raymond hype, he just can’t quite meet it but I think making his dialogue office workaholic obsessed would really define him as a character! I don’t know why they went to the trouble of making each villager a bio and unique traits in previous games only to not use them after wild world. While I still think new leaf is better than wild world the dialogue is actually one of the reasons I still own my copy of wild world so that I can revisit my favourite villagers! I truly thought after the mass past complaint nh would fix this. Given it didn’t I’m not sure what it would take for nintendo to do so. Kind of lost hope on that one. Maybe next animal crossing game?????

XD but in all seriousness, the dialogue in the game made me not want to talk to my villagers anymore. I even only have one photo from my villagers (merengue) lol. When I finally obtained my dreamies from new leaf into new horizons, I never really interacted with them as much. I remember recruiting Stitches into the island through campsite, he said something along the lines of I packed all my snacks like potato chips, tomato chips, but I forgot my tv, oh no I forgot my tv or something like that. When I found Sherb in my campsiteC he said the exact same message. I swear all personality types have the exact same dialogue, no uniqueness to any of them whatsoever. I can’t remember the last time when Merengue talked about cooking even though that’s being a pastry chef is her goal.

Yeahh, the lack of dialogue is the one thing that really disappointed me in this game.. I like to believe nintendo will update the villager conversations in the future, specially since so many people feel the same way.
