Appearently, I found out very late that my town rating automatically gets capped to 1 star if I only have 6 villagers. I.e.: I'll never get any benefits from K.K. being in town unless I get 2 more villagers in town. That just saddens me too much, and I wonder if I even want to keep playing in a town with such restrictions :(

Why are you sad to have more than 6 villagers? Did you have a particular set in mind? There’s so many villagers out there that you might find some more you like. Plus, from personal experience, the island is so large is doesn’t really feel like 10 is too many. I have their houses spread out through my island in pairs and I very rarely see more than 4 together at one time unless there’s an event going on.

i’ve never seen anyone sad about having too many villagers, that’s such a hot take. i kinda love it. Most people, myself included would love to have more than the 10 we’re allowed to have.

It seems like if you’re going for six then maybe you have a specific set in mind? There might be some that would really fit in with those? Is there a specific reason why you didn’t want to add anymore?

Also, just wanting to add, there has never been an Animal Crossing game that has capped villager counts that low, it would be kinda insane if they all of a sudden reduced it down to 6. Especially considering the size of the island.

I can't imagine wanting only 6 either, but I definitely agree that they could have leaned harder into true customization for this game. Only 10 villagers on this massive island because they want to leave room for the very slim possibility of 8 entire player characters? Yeah, no. I wish they would have given us two starter villagers, then the three tutorial homes, and every house plot after that would be optional and could be placed for a small fee, so players could opt to have only 5 villagers if they mostly want space for decorating, or they could invite up to 15 or so if they wanted a bustling city. Seems a bit weird that every single town would have the exact same number of residents.

I can not only imagine a situation where people might want only six villagers, I can imagine a situation where six is too many. You know the saying: Six is a party, ten's a crowd. I'm sure that's something that people say. Some people--whether to service the narrative of their island or because they simply prefer a smaller party--would just prefer to keep things on the smaller side.

I'm of a mixed opinion as to the best way of handling it, though. On the one hand, I don't think progression should be tied to the rating of your island. On the other, if you don't tie some kind of reward to it, there's no real point in having an island ranking at all. The simple solution to that would be to just remove the island ranking altogether, but I'm not sure if that's a perfect solution, either, because I do think the game needs to have some kind of tangible goal, even if that goal is open-ended and even if the player has the freedom to stray far from said goal.

Either way, if the game is going to entrust you with the privilege of dictating every single facet of a villager's life, I think they should at least allow you the chance to increase or decrease the number of them.

honestly i wish the game allowed you to have a more loose villager requirement. make it so you can have as little as 5 villagers or even up to 15 (like the og game).

Let us have only one (or none) if we want!!

I think this is the best compromise. I would love to have 15 villagers. It’s too bad we can’t use the extra player characters plots for villagers. The most amount of player characters I will have is 3.

Yes, giving players options will ensure not all islands are almost the same across, with the same number of villagers.

I have 8 villagers on my island and it caps the island rating at 4 stars so ill never get the golden watering can diy, too bad there's a "right" amount of villagers to have..

I wouldn't want that few either but I can absolutely understand why you might want to. Villager houses do take up space that you could potentially use to create other things on your island. And if you only have a few villagers that you're super attached to anyway, or fit your certain theme/aesthetic, then maybe you don't want the others taking up that much space.

It would be nice if we were allowed to choose how many villagers we have within a certain range. For example, maybe it would be nice if we could have anywhere from 5-12.

I'm with you here for having fewer villagers. I keep my second island at 8 villagers. Which I think is the fewest you can have to keep things rolling.

Until Nintendo gives us bigger towns, 10 or more villager houses just overcrowds the island, especially if you want them to have yards and have other players on the island.

I've actually complained about it a few times now and then XD. Sometimes in the opposite way by saying "We don't need 15, we have too many". Hopefully Nintendo is still learning and will make the next game more customizable for setting how many residents you want.

I can see where they are coming from. The game has a lot of unnecessary restrictions and 'the way things should be' for a game that is supposed to be about creating the island the way you want it to be.

I totally agree with you! I have ten right now because I wanted my town to progress, but I was ok with just having eight.
I realize now that eight would have let me progress….but I was not aware earlier in the game. Now there is no way of removing the two extras. Though Ive come to be ok with the villagers I have right now, it was very hard to make it work on my island. I have a very particular theme going on, and some just didn’t quite match the idea I had in mind. Nor did I have the space back then. Ive made the space though now.

I also have only 8 villagers but my island is 5 stars, so it is possible ! :)
