I know there already are a lot of NPCs and a lot of them are still not in the game. Still am curious though if anyone would like new npcs, the current ones and past ones improved and brought back if not here already, as well as general thoughts on the npcs that we have now.

Personally, I think the current ones could be improved such as Leif, Labelle, Kicks. Those are my least favorites and even though I still have stuff I need from Kicks and Labelle (whose stuff I can get from Ables), I never feel like buying from them tbh.I don’t like Labelle’s clothes and while I like some of Kicks stuff (only the backpacks), I am not interested in shoes and socks. Leif, may be useful when I need bushes - if i need bushes; but since i got all the flowers i need, I don’t have any need to buy from him. While I am interested more in clothes than I used to, I still wouldn’t mind Labelle returning to Ables and leave the spot she takes to someone else or just have it free.

I’d love some of the past npcs to return and do like the idea of maybe adding a few new ones, if they offer things everyone would like. I know some people don’t want any more buildings. I’m one that would like more to make an area on my island look like a town. In HHD, they had restaurants, office buildings, department stores. I’d maybe like having a restaurant or bakery and they offer different types of furniture and consumables that give special perks (if katrina isn’t returned, have there be something that lets you stay underwater longer, move by bugs undetected, get only bells or items (maybe have the items drop be exclusive to this perk and not the stuff we have already) when shaking trees, or faster friendship building rate for a week or x time.

I would love to have some options to get rid of of unwanted furniture from a villager’s house and/or reset the house to default, not to mention that I think they deserve to have house expansions and better interiors exteriors. If Lottie/Lyle/Digby returned, have limited options to modify their houses. I say limited since I know this game is not HHD and not everyone wants to be able to have full freedom to decorate their houses since it may take away any reflection of the villager’s tastes and personality (personally, I don’t see much in the interiors of my villagers that reflects their likes or not enough).

I have more ideas, but I’ll leave it for another post. Sorry for the long post again 😅.

I put other because basically I always think the number of npcs is fine and overly worry the game will get too crowded but always enjoy when they add new ones (this is my first ac game so they are all new to me) 😅

I would love for Leif to become or semi permanent fixture on the island, partly because I think he is sweet and adorable and partly because I feel like there is so much potential for his role, especially with the new emphasis on outdoor decorating. Like perhaps he could be a mechanic for getting planter boxes/ potted versions of flowers, or introduce new varieties of plants for our island.

I agree on the idea of having a limited ability to modify villager houses. Like you I think there is a balance between wanting to have unique houses which show some more personality for the villagers and wanting to be able to fix cluttered houses or houses we just don’t like.

since I have not experienced the older games, I don’t really feel a sense of missing characters the way those who played other games do, but generally adding characters as part of a new activity, the way pascal was added would be the most appealing.

also sort of stealing this from an animal crossing world article, but I would love some new/ different puzzle islands like the one we had last year for May Day. And that could give us at least some cameo opportunities for some of the different npcs.

so yeah, although I don’t have a lot of ideas, I am looking forward to seeing some new hopefully world expanding new content added this year

I think it'd be nice to see a couple oldies and new NPCS as well. I try to stray away from daydreaming about ideas just because I'm not part of the dev team and my ideas won't telepathically reach them but, I think a really smart idea is for them to implement a mainland. Usually towns on islands have a connection to the mainland by ferry and if they want to keep within the island theme, it would make sense to create that.

This could be similar to ACNL with main street, and that could open up to more shopping districts like GracieGrace or whatever else. Maybe there's a potential option where you could invite certain NPCS to live on your island for more buildings or keep them on the mainland. This benefits both parties. I could probably take 1-2 more building on my island but I don't want anything invasive like the museum.

My big dream would be to have more shop upgrades introduced, along with an eventual department store. Except, instead of "Gracie's" it'd be "Labelle's". Her fashion checks would now have more value since you'd have to pass a certain number to earn the upgrade, and once you did, she'd introduce a store like Gracie's in ACNL- upscale fashion for different seasons with some fancy furniture. I feel like it'd give her more value AND would be great character development. By which I mean... she started as sort of an apprentice to Gracie who rebelled and left home and was a bit snooty in early games. But, as time went on, it's like she became more comfortable in herself and her skills and now she's a lot nicer and more confident. So how cool would it be if she got a proper store? PLUS, Gracie would OBVIOUSLY visit on occasion... with tougher fashion checks and vintage Gracie clothes as rewards 😉 I've... put way too much thought into this, lol.

I'd also love to see someone (or just an upgrade to Chip) who would do deep sea creature models. Maybe Pascal has a niece we've never met before?

And I don't think there's a single NPC from previous games I'd be disappointed to see again! I'd especially love a Brewster's cafe and some gyroids added. Personally, I think they will be eventually- it's just a matter of time...

I would love to see some new npcs.

There's some npcs that I loved in NL (Harriet, Reese, and Kappn especially) and it would be great if they could have a place in NH, but I'm also open to new characters and new things to do.

I hope whatever they add, if they do add things, is something that lasts a while and has some soul. Saharah is one of the npcs they brought back, but she was more fun in NL, imo. Walking into your house and seeing what she'd done was a lot more interesting than countless lines of repetitive dialogue and having to check your inventory to see what you got. The plaza while an interesting idea initially, just seems like a cheap way to see npcs/shop at this point and needlessly limits our access. I wish the plaza were used for more fun things like traveling fairs, theater plays, or games.

What I'd most like are charming and memorable experiences and things to do long term.

Some ideas for old characters:
Harriet could offer new hairstyles and colors - maybe even multicolored hair, makeup, or nicer wigs that you could earn over time.
Kappn instead of taking us to an island, could take us to 'the mainland' - a much more urban place with shops or places to play with other players (how fun would it be to go to a restaurant or concert with other players?)
Reese and Cyrus could have a shop to customize all the items in game that we currently can't color change (maybe a once a day thing or for it to take hours.) Flea market or online auction house, too.
I need Leif to be groundskeeper... pick up sticks, dig up any new wildflowers, and change out the bushes with the seasons. 😅 Maybe he can have his own greenhouse and help us grow new trees/flowers/plants/vegetables.

Before the game launched, I was under the impression that we'd get more new NPCs than old ones. So I was really excited with having relatives of past NPCs like Daisy Mae, CJ & Flick. Although somehow a part of me still prefer old familiar faces.

The other NPCs could've been replaced with other counterparts, but somehow it feels a little... off. I couldn't picture an AC game where Tom Nook was replaced with some other guy. Or other tiny critters running a shop. Or a different singer than KK. Can't have the Roost without Brewster, or a boutique without the Able Sisters. I guess it's because these are characters you see and can interact with everyday, unlike Nat, Chip & Joan.

Yeah I would be all for new NPCs as long as they do their roles right and they have an actual purpose to be useful. On the other hand I would still want the old NPCs to make a return, but just like the new ones they need to have a good role for them to fit the theme that New Horizons is going for. For example Kappa makes perfect sense since he has a tropical theme going on for him,

Although it can be a bit controversial, because if some of the new NPCs were to replace the old ones it won't feel right. I already know that CJ replaced Chip, Flick replaced Nat, and lastly Daisy Mae replaced Joan. So if there was like new NPCs that would replace the old ones like say Kappa or (dare I say it) Brewster this could be either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what they do with the designs for the NPCs.

Regardless of what could happen in the future I am fine with new NPCs showing up as long as they have a purpose and reason to be there and the same goes for the older NPCs that we've known since the original Animal Crossing.

I'd be into new NPCs as well as older ones! For example I really love the addition of Flick and Daisy Mae to the AC universe, but I also love past NPCs like Kapp'n and Reese. My main issues with ACNH stem from the gameplay itself and not from NPCs so I don't really mind if new characters are introduced over adding characters from past games, or vice versa.

I have no idea what kind of new NPC could be brought in at this stage of the game and I can't imagine what or who they would be. It took me a really long time to get used to ACNH's new NPCs as much as I love them (except CJ... he can trap himself on a 3rd tier cliff forever for all I care!) I'd be happy with any NPC really, I just can't imagine what a new NPC would be or what their purpose would be.

I think it makes more sense for older NPCs to be brought back slowly through events/updates than introduce new NPCs. I'm still hoping for Kapp'n and his family, especially his daughter Leila. I think she'd fit in well with the younger generation new NPC like Flick, CJ, and Daisy Mae. Also Katie, wherever she is. I'm hoping for Kapp'n or Leila specifically because he, or his daughter, would be perfect as a recurring NPC that shows up either at the secret beach or the pier, or even take us to a new location (my ultimate dream). A mainland or new island similar to Harvey's place as someone mentioned, would be a fun way to bring back a ton of oldies.

NPC interaction isn't really ACNH's strong point so I'm not expecting much though. It would be disappointing to me if NPCs returned in the same capacity that the "rotational NPCs" do but if we're following the theme of the recent updates, it might be just that.

I've thought about this a little bit.

It's never sat right with me that we've never got legitimate specialists in artistry and underwater diving. Let's be clear, Blathers is a Museum Curator but he is an Archaeologist first and foremost in terms of field speciality. This hasn't been developed on that much sadly.

He alludes to buying your fossil donations whenever you bring him fossils that you've already donated and so I think he should be able to purchase them at a slight inflated buying price; this could be a thank you for all the time you took to donate to him and build up his museum.

As for underwater diving and artistry, I think they could bring in new NPCs to give the two fields a face.

3 diving creatures that come to mind would be a Dolphin NPC, Whale NPC or Manatee NPC. One of these potential NPCs could be an expert on deep-sea diving and could be met on occasion in a new area (whether that be an underwater lair or an occasional access point beyond the island's sea barriers that could bring you to visit them). Like others may have suggested, they could give you particular swimming gear if you complete tasks for them; examples being a faster swim suit, having a special snorkel mask (which can help you stay underwater for longer) and etc + buy your deep sea creatures at an inflated price. If particular datamines are anything to go by - villagers are set to wear swimsuits, so naturally there should be a deep-sea diving tourney of some sort which would reward you with inflated buying prices and special items for your findings.

Artistry is a little harder to develop on, it's definitely harder to find a larger purpose for the field. The only thing I could imagine is an Orangutan NPC with a beret and paint palette at the Residents Services annoying every villager on your island about the deeper meaning of art, even the smugs wouldn't like listening to this guy. The only thing that came across my mind would be sculpting gyroids with clay with this Orangutan's assistance but I prefer their association and prospected return with Brewster. But hypothetically, this would give you an opportunity to use clay more (to me, it's the most neglected natural resource DIY ingredient) and get creative with these weird designs for the gyroids that weren't anything like previous games. Then once you are done sculpting them, you could paint the gyroids with the Orangutan rewarding you based on a point system and giving you particular items for your work/gyroids that you could trade to him instead of him paying you with money for them; as money for art is not the true artist's way according to him. lol

I've always wanted art to be a prominent feature in the AC games but the likes of pro designs and QR codes centered around island design and cloth design takes away from it.

I don't think anything new will happen with art or deep-sea diving but it's fun to think about it.

How weird would a human NPC be? 👀

For real though, idk, maybe a crab or whale NPC. I'd love it if we could get a mini island not part of our main island that we can do whatever on. Maybe the NPC is a part of that some how.

You need to get on Nintendo's team I want everything you just said.

I dont feel a need for old NPCs to come back especially. There are some that could work but others like the pelicans or Harriet have been made completely redundant so would need new roles which seems weird to do.
I dont think characters should be added purely for nostalgia sake. If they dont fit the game, they don't fit the game.

There is room for some like gracie to come back which i would be happy to see. Expensive items would be a good drive to get bells after paying off the house.

But I would also be happy if it was purely new NPCs added instead of any old ones.
Like I prefer CJ, flick and daisy mae to their counterparts.

I hope the next Animal Crossing does an "everybody is here" addition like Smash, although I see how unlikely that is.

Copper/Booker construction service is my dream, where we can build multiple ramps/inclines a day as well as move multiple buildings.

It'd be awesome if the NPCs who visit the Plaza weekly would just become full-time NPCs moving in with Nooks or Abels, or a new building would be amazing. And then have Katrina, Gracie, etc become the Plaza visitors.

Ideas for new NPCs? we don’t even have updates on the old ones. What is Pete doing? Is he with Pelly or Phyllis? Is he still delivering mail or does the AC universe have their own version of Dejoy??? Is Digby still showcasing homes? Is Harriet still doing hair??? Is Lyle still being super judgey about people’s homes? Did Katie ever find her mom? Where is Kapp’n we want sea shanties back!

We need answers Nintendo...

i know someone's going to be like "tHiS iSnT nEw LeAf" but i want the old NPCs brought over in essentially the same way they were implemented there. so:
  • leif is moved into nook's cranny. he's stupid to have as a roaming NPC given that you're going to want to buy bushes pretty frequently (especially if you swap them out with the seasons), and yet he only comes once a fortnight. should've been in nook's cranny from the start, really, much like how they introduced him in NL.
  • kicks moves into the able sisters upstairs (or into a back room, since these buildings are bigger on the inside), allowing him to have more inventory available as well as offer new bags. this could even unlock the ability to design your own bags using some of the pre-existing bag models. (namely the town backpack or whatever it's called.)
  • where label goes depends on gracie. no gracie? label joins her sisters on the shop floor but is mostly there for "decoration" or to let you do fashion checks/themed outfits for fun.
  • gracie returns and starts off as a visiting NPC like she did in NL, considering opening a branch here due to the island's growing popularity. she makes you undergo three fashion checks (on three different visits) to "see if fashion is appreciated here", and they're harder than label's. when all three are passed, she opens her second floor at nook's cranny and sells her sets/clothes from past games. in this scenario, label can be found here working at a designing table as gracie's now also sells a fashion line + set of furniture they collaborated on as fellow designers. (no rivalry here, folks. just two designers who respect each other's work and ideas.)
  • since she got replaced by a mirror, harriet is now a visiting NPC who offers exclusive hairstyles, hair colors, wigs and accessories for you to buy. (one time purchase for the first two; then they'll appear in the mirror.) since she did contacts in NL, she could also offer new eye colors too.
  • i'm one of those people who thinks the post office + pelicans should never have been replaced with a crummy card stand to begin with. once you've had x amount of visitors, you can find orville thinking behind the counter one day, and when spoken to he mentions how there's been more mail recently due to the island's growing popularity and that "it's a lot of work for just one dodo to handle". this prompts them to open a gift shop/post office on the right where the card stand currently is. pelly, phyllis and pete get their roles back from NL, orville can focus on his actual job, and the player can now save an additional 300 letters (when you go over the 300 or whatever in your mailbox) and send multiple letters at once.
  • katrina would be the same as past games. she's such an obvious roaming NPC with her tent i'm surprised she still hasn't been added.
  • kapp'n either takes you to the island himself (from the pier) or helps his wife run the 'resort' because the dodos take you there now instead. tortimer is also there with his mini-games, as per NL.
  • brewster! i personally want him to have a cafe in the museum again as opposed to a solo store because i don't have room, but mostly i just want him back. you can still play the part-time job mini-game and earn similar (if not the same) rewards to NL, including the food/drink items your villagers are always holding. (or he just sells them like he does the coffee. either one.) like in CF/WW (i forget which), he'll also offer to store gyroids for you and/or has a small exhibit room of his own where you can decorate with/display them.
  • wendell (bet nobody saw this one coming) returns as a wandering NPC and works the same way as CJ and flick. since his dreaming days, he's taken a (mostly hunger-motivated) interest in deep sea creatures and will buy them from you at an inflated price. he'll also offer to make you models of them. now, before you say flick is the model maker, hear me out: this sweet walrus himbo's role in all past games has revolved around his artistic/design ability, and he even had an item called "wendell's painting" in his NL RV. he can totally make models too. believe in him!
  • phineas returns as a visiting NPC in his role from CF, with his inventory including the missing bunny and heart balloons, ice-creams and other pinwheel colors (i think there are seven more) as well as some new handheld items like, say, a teddy bear.
i left some out, but these are the ones i really had ideas for. as for new NPCs...

while we have bugs, fish and art covered, what about fossils? i've always liked the idea of a wandering dog NPC (either a spaniel or airedale terrirer) who buys fossils at an inflated price and offers to make you the miniature fossil models from NL if you bring him all the parts needed. (so the head, torso, legs etc.) he could be old friends with blathers and refer to him in dialogue, alluding to 'wild' stories from when they were younger and/or in college, and maybe even mention how he's a curator or exhibition designer at the faraway museum.

Sure, I wouldn't mind if the old npcs came back. But the question is, what would they do? Maybe Pete can give you crafting recipes for new stationary that you can write letters with and Pelly and Phyllis could give you tips on how to get the materials needed if not give the player some. Digby could be in the happy home showcase, (for people who never played new leaf, the happy home showcase was a feature you could use to show off your home to people you streetpass). They could make it online since the switch doesn't have streetpass. Maybe chip and nat could come and give the player golden fishing rod recipes or golden net and maybe have a shop that gives out fish bait or honey to attract bugs. Lottie is probably coming back (according to @Rosch i think it was) and she might have something to do with the possible happy home showcase I talked about. Same with Lyle. Harriet could give the player special diys to get even more hairstyles and haircolors. Nintendo may or may not add all of these characters in, but I'll just end this off with, Nintendo can add new characters that replace the old, but sometimes they should at least give them SOMETHING so people who played the older games like myself can recognize them.

I miss the old NPCs and I'd love for them to comeback. I feel like by omitting old NPC's and not actually creating new ones to replace them it's left the game feeling empty.

I miss Porter but at least his absence makes sense with the inclusion of Wilbur and Orville. I don't really miss Nat or Chip but they were replaced with CJ and Flick - same goes for Joan being replaced by Daisy Mae.

Everybody else though? They're either not included or they're included in a lazy way and that really bothers me.

Wisp: He's an NPC I really don't care for. They've written the need for him out of the game and what he does is useless. I'd prefer they either remove him entirely or at least his little gimmick could be improved upon? I really don't see why he has to give us such lousy rewards. He could give us DIYs we don't have yet or give us different colour variations of the NMT items. Something that would actually be exclusive and magical.

Celeste: I love her and I think she is so cute but I really wish she would move into the museum again. I'd love to see her on the top floor and have a planetarium! Especially with the graphics in New Horizons that would be stunning. Getting to see her chart the stars and maybe you get to match up constellations or something, idk. Something more than her wandering around when shooting stars are out.

Leif/Kicks/Labelle: Grouping them all together because they all have the same fault. None of them should be randomly appearing NPCs. Labelle is completely pointless and her inclusion just serves to remind me that we don't have Gracie yet and I almost always ignore her. I want her to be reunited with her sisters! Kicks can either open up his own shop or maybe move in/branch off of The Able Sisters. Leif desperately needs his own shop because his randomized nature is what bothers me the most. I have him on my island today (thank goodness) but prior to that I hadn't seen him since my shrubs went out of season and if I missed him today who knows when he would be back. I'd really love to see him have his own little garden shop again! I loved the design of it in New Leaf but I wouldn't be opposed to him moving in with the Nooklings either if it meant having a permanent residence again.

Gulliver/Gullivarr/Pascal: I don't mind their inclusion. I didn't care for Gulliver in New Leaf either and I don't have strong feelings either way on switching from questions to finding phone pieces. Pascal is my little friend and I love him, lol. I'm so glad he's in the game!

I'm sure I've skipped over some but then there's also the NPCs we are missing who didn't get a replacement.

My postal worker trio: I miss them. The little postcard rack in the airport is not a stand in for them and I'm sure if we had a proper postal office I'd receive my mail twice a day and Pete would let me order more than 5 items 😭

Kapp'n and his family/Tortimer: I know why they're not included but I think this could've been an easy fix and it would also give us mini-games back. When we talk with Orville there should be three island options: Mystery island, Harv's Island, and Tortimers Island. Tortimers island would reunite us with Kapp'n (although this time he'd be helping with the shop or something) and we'd also get mini games back as well as getting to see Tortimer!

Katrina/Harriet/Dr. Shrunk/Reese & Cyrus/Brewsters/Gracie/any other shop NPC I'm missing: I miss these NPC's and I miss their shops. New Horizons lets us place furniture outside which is all well and good but the island itself still feels so empty. The shops don't have to be huge and none of them have to be mandatory either! But I'd love to have the option to bring them back. I probably wouldn't opt to have Katrina back but I'd love Reese & Cyrus to come back (especially since the Nooks are no doubt ripping me off with those buying prices 😭 I miss Brewsters and I want the Nooklings to upgrade and either take Gracie in under their wing or Gracie can set up her own boutique. I'm sure there's ways to make the shops fit on our island either by grouping them together or not making them huge. Harriet can specialize in wigs and maybe she'd be better suited to that wandering/pop up NPC life vs actually having a whole shop since we have our mirrors to change hairstyles now.

Booker & Copper/Resetti Brothers: I didn't really love any of these NPC's in New Leaf but I know that some people love them and I really don't see why they had to be written out of the game. Yes, New Horizons auto-saves but I don't see why we still couldn't have a little manhole with the Resetti's below ground since I believe they're the ones who save you if you get stranded somewhere, right? With Booker & Copper there's still lost items and I'd rather have them then the Lost Box in the town hall. Replacing NPC's with lifeless game mechanics is part of why New Horizons feels dull, imo.

Phineas: My boy Phineas 😭 Made obsolete by having our Nook Phones but again, he's one of those mechanics that didn't need to be replaced. I think that the NMT program could still exist for certain achievements but for the bigger ones I'd still love that badge-style of progression. Finding all my island fossils/artwork/bugs/fish/sea creatures, buying all the available clothing/furniture, learning all the DIYs, etc things like that, those big milestones should still belong to Phineas. This is definitely a personal preference though and I don't expect everybody to agree, I just miss him, lol. I loved seeing him appear in New Leaf and getting a new badge.

I dunno. I'm sure I'm missing others but I feel like part of what gives Animal Crossing it's life is the NPCs. By taking away shops and not replacing them and taking away wandering NPC's (Katie, Phineas, Pete, etc) it makes the island seem so much more empty. It really contributes to my island feeling more like a dollhouse and less like an actual place where residents want to live.

I don't really have new NPC's in mind but I would also love for current NPC's to wander around after their shops close. I think that would be a really nice touch, especially since we saw one of the little Nookling's wander around during the beginning of the game with his little flag 🥺 Or for Blathers maybe after you've finished donating everything to the museum it would be nice to see him wandering around and enjoying the exhibits.
