before we start, this might not even end up actually being in the game, (because I don't think Nintendo cares about b what the fans want giving that Brewster, tool usage meters and more aren't in yet.)
Getting back to the main point, I have done some exploring in the acnh rang thread where people talk about things they want in the game. Most people said fences and added back special npcs and whatnot. But I don't think anyone mentioned how there are no added villager types in the game. If you did I'm sorry, that thread has 200+ pages and even I don't have time to read every message posted. Anyway, this isn't a rant thread, just ideas that might get added in if we are all lucky.
⚠️ PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFFENSE TO OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS. THATS THE WAY THEY THINK, AND THEY HAVE THE RIGHT THAT THINK THAT. if you don't like what someone says on here, deal with it in a private conversation please. I'm sorry if I'm getting on your nerves, I just don't want this thread turning into a flame war and getting mods involved. Got all that? Good. ⚠️
Changing to blue coloring: I think villager personalities shouldn't be gender locked. I'm surprised no one on the rant thread took offense to this. Normals read books and talk about nature and whatnot, but lazy villagers, who are the male equivalent to normal villagers, act nothing like normal villagers. They are obsessed with bugs and talk about fish and whatnot. Nintendo should make an update to them so they act more like them. Or maybe make a normal boy who likes to read Manga or something 🤔 idk.

I want crankier crankies just like in the older games or just someone with a bit of a challenge to get close to or get to know. It’d also be interesting to see how it will fare with the other villagers if they were “meaner” (not mean mean but you know, just a bit snarky maybe) to other villagers. It’ll give richer neighborhood dynamics, IMO.

I would love to see the 'punk' personality type for male villagers. I know this was said elsewhere, but it's weird to see certain villagers who are obviously designed to be punks, like Cyd and Rasher, act like grumpy old men instead.

For female villagers, perhaps something like a 'goth' or 'mystic' personality type, for villagers with an interest in darkness, spooky stuff, and mysticism/the occult. Is this mostly because I don't think that Muffy fits the uchi personality? Maybe. I'd love to see Bella as a goth villager, too. I'm sure there are some snooties that might be better suited to this personality type, as well.

A Nerd. Who is always giving you interesting little facts about the weather or the world that you've never heard before. They will not repeat any of these tidbits they've already said to you. Once they've exhausted their dialogue, they will always ask to leave in order to explore the world and its mysteries. They will write to you, every now and then, after they leave.

A Nice Guy. Bland and polite, and is always giving you gifts or doing you favours. You can get him to run errands such as always shaking fruit or money trees and bringing you the fruit or money. He has a weak constitution though, and falls ill often. He will not recover unless you bring him medicine. At least 3 times.

A Prankster. Always telling riddles and jokes. May set up a pitfall trap outside your house every so often. Other islanders will complain. Even Nook. They make up for their mischievous ways by giving you, on rare occasions, gifts of clothing and furniture that cannot be obtained elsewhere.

I've exhausted all my designated brain cells for the day and so I cannot even offer suggestions of the types of animals these personalities would be. But I would like the snake to be a new species. 🐍

I absolutely loove this idea! Maybe in more general terms it'd be better though, having some male villagers act "aggressively" in the sense that they'd be very blunt and direct and all that stuff would fit with that personality type, and for the mystic female villagers it'd be fun to see them have a bit of a lower voice and talk in an emotionless way, like, very dry and always talking in a mysterious way

The one thing I always hoped tho is for the personalities to not have gender associated with them, there are villagers that absolutely fit personalities of the opposite gender and it'd be nice if it was just genderless tbh

ahhh nerdy villagers would be so great! Possibly a more realistic/practical personality would be nice. Like a straight-to-the-point kinda villager, idk where I got this from but I like my idea lol

I like the prankster idea!!!

I also want nerdy villagers. They'd talk about scientific facts and also about videogames and TV/movies.

i don't want personalities to be gender locked, i want a female smug lol

also i really want a rock/punk personality, it would be so snazzy and would really suit villagers like cherry, kyle, jacques etc
then like others have mentioned, a shy or nerd villager would be super cute 💖

I'd like to have an additional 6 personality types that are close enough to the gc/ww personalities. I know its asking too much but the fake niceness you get from practically all personalites are extremely boring.

I also agree that personality types should not be gender locked. I would love some female jocks/crankies, and maybe a sort of "big brother/brotherly" style to match the Uchi villagers. Call them "sporty", "grumpy", and "sibling" style personalities!

I think artistic/creative as a personality type could be cool, and it could help thin out more over-stuffed and generic categories like "normal" into different sub groups. If there is a lazy category, I'd love to see it matched with a hard-working category where those villagers would be more likely to help clean up the island (pick up sticks like some of them do, etc) and maybe even be more likely to contribute to things like bridges/stairs. A logical personality would also be awesome- I think of it as a way to interject villagers who are into science/learning into the game.

I think that's a great idea! I think I'm also more for sub-types of existing personalities. Take Smug for example. You can have the current "hipster" type personality, but also a more cool/tough guy sub-type too. Jocks can branch out to a more military/police academy type, an aspiring Olympian type, etc. Crankies could be more cute grandpa-types, talking about their grandkids, or a younger, meaner bitter sub-type. I think there's a lot of possibilities that could be expanded on more.

I don’t know what other personalities should be include, but want to just add a note for those unfamiliar with Japanese language that the personality types (imo at least) make more sense in Japanese because they all speak in very distinct ways, particularly in terms of what first person pronouns they use. Japanese pronouns are gendered and there are a lot of different ones which give a different impression not just one for male identifying people and one for female identifying people (I am not knowledgeable about how non binary culture or individuals identify and use language for themselves in Japan, sorry)

but so from my perspective this is why you don’t have female ‘lazies’ because the dialogue all uses the first person pronoun ‘boku’, traditionally a less assertive, more ‘soft’ and polite male first person pronoun.

the uchi’s are called uchi because that is the first person pronoun they use, and they actually speak in kansai dialect.

so this is not meant to rain on anyone’s parade, but just to say that I believe a lot of the gendered nature of villager personalities is that language use in Japanese is more gendered than in English, and the personalities are heavily tied to different manners of speaking (each personality speaks in a distinct way to the point where you can tell what personality they are even if you did not understand the actual content of their speech). So for a female smug etc they would have to write a completely separate dialogue in the original Japanese.

(Again there may be more complexity in terms of gender non confirming language, but I do not know enough about the implications and cultural significance to discuss)

i just think this kind of thing is interesting to think about, I dunno

it would be interesting to see how they might incorporate a less binary understanding of gender into the game, but I am not sure how/ when something like that might be done.

more on topic, I hope they do not create more mean personality types, because I dislike the idea that being mean makes someone more interesting/ unique/ complex (kind of like how a sad ending is not inherently better than a happy ending). I would prefer that new or expanded personality types be created in more interesting ways.

First of all, I love your avatar and signature: Morgana is the best and I'll definitely play the new Persona game (as my bf send it to me, that's so kind but before I have to do the older version). Closed parenthesis. I just wanted to go into ecstasies for a minute.

New personalities could be someone very passionate about something other than sport haha. Music, maybe, with interesting facts, but nothing too strong as jock villager who talk all the time about sport and nothing else. We could have a little bunch of different passions: music, bugs or fishs, decorating... like a fusion between Blathers, normal villagers and Flick.
Some lonely villagers could be great as well! Like the stereotypical boy you can see in some shonen, someone so cold you need time to approach, sometimes, but so cute and shy!
I've read some creative villagers; I agree with you totally! I should be a very good idea! Beautiful houses in coming too. They write (and sometimes shows you what they did), draw, they live in their own world but are always happy to teach you something! Why not some type of killjoy? But more than crankies actually are. Never happy.

I don't know, the eight personalities are not that bad (except for jock in my opinion) but I think we need more dialogues and shades.

A lot of good ideas in this thread! I've thought it was kind of interesting how Pocket Camp is set up, in addition to personalities, they also have "themes" to differentiate villagers and there are 11 total and it's not gender locked. Here's a link if you're curious which villagers fall into which category: Themes

Civic
Cool
Cute
Elegant
Harmonious
Hip
Historical
Modern
Natural
Rustic
Sporty
