I’m looking for sad animes that’ll make me cry but that have happy endings

I feel as if Anohana is pretty neutral in this? The ending is still a bit sad, but it’s overall implied that everyone left with a feeling of satisfaction and overall release.

There’s always Naruto if you feel like watching a superrrrr long anime, but, maybe because I had been watching Naruto ever since I was a little kid, I still will re-binge the show every two or three years because I always find the story worth all the tragic anime backstories (for the most part). Also, if you do go through with Naruto, make sure you skip the god awful filler.

Madoka Magica also is on the neutral list, where you know that how everything ended is overall for the best, but it’s still VERY deeply emotional and will probably leave you feeling pretty empty but also glad you watched it because it was just that good.

Your Lie in April is sad overall, but so so beautifully done. It’s one of those that I treasure so much because even though everything about it is sad, the story was so masterful that I still highly recommend the show to every single person I know. Plus the anime is about music, giving it lots of plus points in my book!

Fullmetal Alchemist is one that has an overall happy ending, but can get really deeply sad at times and the story is absolutely incredible! If you’ve never seen it before, I highly recommend.

These are all the shows off the top of my head, but if I think of any more I’ll be sure to post!

You should give "A Place Further Than The Universe" a try. It's sweet and has an amazing ending. Also cried like every episode. It's got that bitter sweet burn!

Clannad will lull you into a false sense of security then rip your heart out and spit on it in front of you while making direct eye contact the whole time. But don’t worry, I promise it has a happy ending!

I’d say Violet Evergarden and Anohana have bittersweet endings. They’re both good shows, and left me with good feelings overall.
Warning though: the second half of Violet Evergarden had me and my two roommates (both male btw.) crying every episode ^ェ^’

Depending on what kind of sadness you’re going for, March Comes In Like a Lion could be a great choice. It has lots of sad moments, but builds toward happiness throughout and ends on a very positive note comparatively. If you’re down for a longer/slower show, the payoff is huge in this one.

Clannad is the saddest thing I have ever seen in a long time.

I guess the movie Your Name can also work for this, though it has a pretty goofy premise and beginning because of that.
Your Name had me crying up until the very end haha. It’s such a good movie though!

Another movie is In This Corner of the World. It’s really heavy because it’s about a young woman who moves near Hiroshima in the final years of World War II. You can probably guess what happens, and it can be pretty brutal at times, but I think the movie ends with an uplifting message. I’d recommend watching the end credits when you’re done. :)

Gurren Lagann is a gundam anime that starts out good, gets sad, and then has a (mostly) happy ending.

I would also second Fullmetal Alchemist, specifically Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Also, I WOULD recommend Parasyte the maxim, but it’s also pretty violent and I’m not sure if you’re into that. My favorite anime to this day and underrated as well. Really makes you question what it is to be human.

Given is definitelyyyy one of my top fave animes, and I ugly cried 3 times LOL. It's boys' love tho if you're cool with that genre (but it's not like the typical seme/uke kind). Definitely give it a shot if you want something real and emotional haha

Unfortunately it's only 12 episodes, but I have read that they're coming out with a season 2 !

Hey everyone! Thanks for the suggestions!

From what you've mentioned, I've seen the following: Anohana, Orange (which I loved), FMA:Brotherhood and Your Name (which I also loved and have loved all the films by that director!), so we're really on the same track.

I've been recommended Your Lie In April before but from what my friends have told me, it's super sad and doesn't end very happily. I don't want to get into a really sad anime with no happy (or hopeful) ending. Would you say that's the case with this one?

I'll definitely check the other ones you've mentioned. Given looks very interesting? I'm really into sad romance animes, so if you have more of those, bring em up!

For reference: I've also seen and liked Erased, Kids on the Slope (one of my favorites), Steins;Gate, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I was also recommended Toradora, but could never get into it (watched like 3 eps).

Clannad is one of my favorite anime (heck I even bought the game on the switch) but the ending still confuses me to this day, although a little less

But yeah Your Lie in April is something else

It’s not a show but the anime movie “silent voice” was amazing. My bf and I recently watched it and let me tell you, I cried for 10 minutes over one scene. Super vivid animation and beautiful story!! Definitely an emotion jerker too (I felt more than sadness) and that’s what I look for in movies. It’s on Netflix if you have it c:

off topic but I’m totally book marking this thread! I love these types of anime’s.

Oh shoot sorry I didn’t know you’ve seen it haha! My b. I’ll add it to my list! Thanks!!!

Poco’s Udon World is a really underrated cute but “slice-of-life” sort of anime ^-^ The plot is sad but the ending is sweet though!

I was gonna recommend Natsume’s Book of Friends but tbh some of the episodes are downright depressing so idk if I would add that to your list.
