i'm sounding like a noob here, but i'm confused..

i've seen a few people say they use their museum for storage,
but i really don't get what this means? i assumed they just dropped any spare items there, but anytime i've tried to put anything in the museum it hasnt allowed me to drop it.
can someone please explain to me how to do this? or if i'm even right? D:

They're referring to the Museum Gift shop/Second floor of the museum
It has four empty exhibit rooms that you can use and many players use this for extra storage

It's an unlockable pwp where you have to donate a total of 20 items to the museum and one to each category (fossils, fish, insects and art)

You don't unlock the gift shop first, you just get an upgrade for the second floor of the museum and it includes both the gift shops and the rooms you can decorate. At least, I don't remember unlocking them separately.

Yeah, you unlock the second floor entirely, where you can buy 4 different rooms where you can store things. I personally love that feature. After Blathers requests the second floor, the Caf? is next!

It's a super useful feature if you're a hoarder like me. I'm sure someone out there uses it to set up legitimate displays/exhibits of some kind, but nah, it's all storage over here.

You have to donate a bunch of times before he'll suggest it though.

Yeah, I have all four rooms - three are used for sets simply so that they don't take up room in my house or storage room. The third room is used for plants and other furniture I don't have room for.
