image upload help?

I heard using the BB code to upload an image here is the best way but every time I upload one the image comes out too big and looks awkwardly placed and when I try to size it down the image quality goes down dramatically. Is there anyway to size it down and keep the quality or at least some of it?

BB code will paste the image as it is. Programs like Gimp and Photoshop can help you shrink an image without killing the quality, at least in my opinion. Both of my signature images used to be like, 1000 pixels large but I shrinked them down IMMENSELY in gimp. (Which, btw, is free if you dont have it.) If you have a picture with many details though then you cant really help it if it looks weird.
Also if a picture is too big, perhaps use a

I upload images to imgur.com, which also permits you to crop or shrink pictures. ms paint can do the same these days if you want to play with the image on your computer before uploading it to the internet...

I wouldn't recommend using paint to resize images. It's very tedious to do and it often causes pictures to be pixely. Imgur is another good option though
