One of the biggest gripes AC players had with NL was the watered-down personalities of villagers. Although we can’t yet confirm the dialogue has been improved, the gameplay footage and screenshots we’ve seen of villagers have at least proven that they are far more expressive than in previous titles. They participate in hobbies, rather than just talk about them; they interact more with items, they drink and eat snacks.

Upon further examination *adjusts glasses*, it seems that the expressiveness of the villagers go beyond just aesthetic and dialogue. In a lot of the footage that has been released, we often see villagers in small groups. Sitting at a picnic, playing in a small band, fishing together in a tourney. Are these scenarios created artificially to make the game look lively, or can we expect villagers to get together and partake in different activities around the island? I’m hoping it’s the latter.

In previous games, we’d be lucky if we ran into two villagers having a conversation. This time around, those occurrences may not be uncommon. What if when villagers communicate with each other, they are setting a playdate, then meet up at a predetermined location on the island. Kind of like how the NPC’s in BotW had daily routines, except this time around it’s more spontaneous.

Will the villagers in NH be more intelligent, self-aware, ... conscious? Would they pass a turing test?
All jokes aside, how do you feel about the villager’s AI? Does it matter to you?

the villager’s AI does matter to me - they were awfully repetitive in new leaf which i suppose is to be expected as there’s only so much that one villager can say but their personalities got watered down and a lot and they didn’t really have any liveliness to them at all.

i’m super excited for all the new actions that they can do and i’d be so happy if we could actually see them hanging out in small groups. they seem to be a lot more interactive this time around and i’m all for it - i hope they feel more like themselves again rather than just a bunch of robots going through the same motions and dialogue over and over again c’:

Villager AI means the world to me tbh. As they're the ones you interact with the most in the game by far besides maybe the shop NPCs, I'm so excited to see all the new stuff they'll be able to do!

I am excited for any interaction, but man pocket camp has burnt me out with the same conversations. I haven’t taken care of my animals in months on there, I just log in and do the events.

Ikr, I forced myself to log into PC yesterday to start the NH event, and I remember how much I don’t like the game. After closing out of like 15 notification windows about events and fortune cookie items, I barely had any will to even continue to the event, lol. I just rapid tap through all the dialogue now because I just can’t be bothered.

Can’t wait for NH so I can finally start reading what my villagers have to say again. It’s been so long...

I know that they would probably never do this, but I wish they could either continuously add dialogue during updates or cycle it out every few months, that way they don't start repeating each other constantly like in New Leaf. That was horrible. "If I may be so bold, you're looking as cool as a fair number of cucumbers..." Sigh @_@

It would also be nice to have some dialogue unique to individual villagers. Not all of it obviously, but some.

I wish each villager had at least some unique piece of dialogue/history attached to him/her rather than it being based just on personality type.

Ok, so I’m not the only one who has that greeting engraved into my memory. I’d welcome dialogue updates/cycles as well. Or at least lines that are so witty, hilarious, and out there that I wouldn’t mind reading it again and again. NL’s dialogue was just so... safe.

That’d be amazing but that’d definitely be asking for too much. Perhaps some kind of programming that allows villagers to learn/adapt/remember.

For example, villagers can learn a hobby from another villager. A normal villager that is usually seen sitting under a tree reading might be seen lifting weights on the beach sometimes, after befriending a jock villager.

Or if a villager asks you to bring them fruit multiple times, they’d be aware of it and maybe mention how you know where to pick the best fruit. Or a snooty villager might mention how last time the fruit you brought her wasn’t very sweet and she’s giving you a chance to redeem yourself, lol.

Yep, for that reason alone I'll always prefer the older games over New Leaf. I don't want to say that I hated NL, I loved it for was it was, but it got stale and boring soooo quickly. I noticed the repeating phrases after like a week of playing which really put me off.

Basically NF was less about villagers interactions and more about in-game achievements, projects, and world building.

But that's not what I play Animal Crossing for. If I wanted that, I'd play the Sims or Minecraft. Just give us back the quality conversations and personalities

Yes!!! I’m so burnt out with pocket camp. It’s a chore instead of a joy. I can’t wait for the joy to come back! Bring on cute animal conversations!

It's very important. As Deca said, I play the game for a chill experience and a lot of that goes to interacting with the villagers rather than playing AC like it's SimCity. I'm hoping the villagers' dialogue has improved a lot this time around. I like that the villagers can wear accessories as well now instead of just the player and that they look to be livelier around town. Those are some good steps towards the immersion.

I’m all for it! Dialogue in NL tended to be so repetitive it got boring fast especially if you have duplicate personalities living in your town. They could literally say the exact same thing one after the other. I hope they’re more fleshed out in New Horizons.

I'm really excited to see them hanging out together the way that people would-- playing instruments together in little groups, enjoying picnics... It will be interesting to see how many furniture items they will be able to interact with!

I've been thinking about this as well. We've seen villagers hanging out together in trailers....but I do wonder if when we load up the game they'll just be wandering randomly at different sides of the town.

I would love if the AI was smart enough to push villagers to interact more often and hang out outside as well as indoors (I think they hang out indoors in New Leaf already)

The personalities in NH
"I'm hungry & I love you"
"I wanna workout & I love you"
"your outfit is stylish & I love you"
"I'm slightly grumpy but I still love you"
"I love you"

Based on what we have seen I'm expecting and hoping for massive improvements. NL really was lacking on this part.

I agree on the assessment that the AI in NL was lacking, but it still rarely bothered me, because of the charm. So I welcome all improvements and charmwise this game looks even more the part. So I think this is all very promising.

I’m so excited for the revamped villager AI!
I really hope we get updates for more dialogue too. I understand it can be difficult to come up with that many lines, but come on! They could easily afford a team to handle just pushing out interesting 30 second conversations. Or record people talking normally and write that down. It’s tedious but I cannot imagine it’d be that difficult.

I feel like the personalities got watered down in NL too and i’m glad that it seems they’ve fixed that this time around. Plus with the new actions we can watch them doing, I’m expecting this to be the most fun animal crossing game yet!
We’ll find out soon enough :)
