Dark skintones and afro-textured hair! So many eyes! Multiple nose & mouth options! Separately added blush! NO GENDER SELECTION!

I wish we had a little more variety in hair, but it's amazing compared to the previous set of generic brown-haired characters. I'd been hoping to be able to change gender freely, but having no designated gender is even better--it's not like this is the kind of game that needs it, when there aren't separate models. I'm curious to see if the skin and face options will be changeable later on.

I really like that dark reddish hair color. It looks the most like my dark hair dyed red. I'm still debating over the kitty mouth. On one hand it is super cute. On the other hand, I think I like the smile better.

this is a feature i always wanted since i started playing animal crossing and i'm so happy it's real now!

Yeah, definitely. A feature like character appearance should always be easily accessible, though it likely comes at a cost that Harriet likely won't be making a return with Shampoodle outside of Photopia more than likely.

not really, more like there is NO gender in new horizons! i assume all gender-specific player dialogue has been removed as well. i saw no gender prompt in the customization, and the body models are the same, so i suppose it makes sense.

debinoresu already said, but basically the player character is neutral and can use both male and female customization, leaving interpretation of the player's gender up to the user.

You can guarantee that more eyes, mouths, hair will be added in the future. Customization is a major aspect of this game and Nintendo would be stupid to not add more character customization going forward. They did it for ACC, so guarantee it will be in this game.
