In-Depth Look at Character Creation

I'm honestly really happy with how they seem to be taking everything gender neutral this time around, I'm loving what they're doing with the character create.

Edit: I'm curious if we're gonna have an update to the makeup section for things like facial hair, beauty marks or freckles.

I really like the gender neutral protagonists! They kind of looked the same (to me, anyway) to begin with, so this change makes sense. Now you won't have to make a guy character and a girl character just for clothing. :d

I'm also curious about makeup! Since it looks like we'll get to pick our hair, eyes, and colors out from a selection screen of some sort, perhaps Harriet will re-appear to give us some late game enhancements? Exciting!

Don't get me wrong, I love the new features ad being able to change how you look whenever you want, but on the other hand it does take a bit of the magic away sitting in the train/bus to answer questions that determine your face for the rest of the game. I'm a bit conflicted on whether giving us the freedom to choose whenever would make us spoiled lol.

I am very happy for those that this helps with representing themselves, first and foremost.
I myself am not too influenced by it, though I am sure both the variety and the ability to change freely will be fun to play around with.

I can't wait to be able to make a villager who actually looks like my fianc?! I've never been a big fan of having to answer questions in order to have the look i wanted - how I felt and how I wanted the character to look never matched up so I always had to use a guide. I love this freedom - to make the character you want, to change them up when you want.

One thing I found annoying in new leaf was the comments of the "boys collection" and "girls collection" in the shop, "Well that is from the boys collection but I guess you can wear it". Just leave me alone :p

I wish we had a little more variety in hair, but it's amazing compared to the previous set of generic brown-haired characters.

I feel like I've seen at least one male hairstyle that didn't appear during these two videos.

I think it's still possible that we might be able to unlock new hairstyles through Harriet....though she might no longer have an actual shop. (I could see her being a town visitor who shows up in front of town hall and sells you new hairstyles.

I wonder if their still going to implement the daintier walk/run when a character wears a dress. Now that they're going full PC with it I feel like they might remove it.

It's really that we are able to change everything about how our character looks. Keeps me from resetting my town because I don't like how my character looks like in New Leaf.
At the same time I fear that I will constantly be changing something, since it doesn't seem to cost anything anymore.
And new hairstyles can be seen purchasable with Nook Miles, so there may be other things for character creation that can be purchased through them.

i feel like most people i know used a guide for all those things anyway

I always used a guide because my first character came out so ugly I hated it. Although saying that I do feel a little sad that that part is being taken away as it felt like a bit of a quirk of animal crossing.

Ahh, we can change the appearance with a mirror in our house. So that's how it'll work post start.

not really, more like there is NO gender in new horizons! i assume all gender-specific player dialogue has been removed as well. i saw no gender prompt in the customization, and the body models are the same, so i suppose it makes sense.

I saw an image that said otherwise. It used the terms "Lad" and "Lass"

So characters like Kapp’n and the flirty villagers will have new personalities? I can’t imagine Kapp’n avoiding gender. I never liked the flirty villagers because their dialogue with make players was so boring. Now what will they sound like? Will they be flirty with everyone or not flirty at all?

I wish we could only change the hair and eye color at mirrors. Switching up your facial features is a bit much.

Wow I've never felt like a new release for a game has listened to its fans to this extent, including stuff we didnt even realize we wanted.

You want to place things outside and have some more freedom? CUSTOMIZE EVERYTHING! MOVE EVERYTHING!
You want to pick how you look at the start? DO IT WHENEVER YOU WANT INCLUDING GENDER!

Removing gender was just an easy way to give all hairstyles and eyes to the player. If I'm not mistaken, Pocketcamp and Happy Home Designer did it first.

These are all great, and I'm happy about the changes made. I'm guessing unnatural hair color has to be unlocked? I know you had to in New Leaf, but I was hoping to have my character look like me from the start.

I'm not sure if I like the idea of being able to change your facial features and skin tone on the fly after the initial customization set up screen. I know you don't have to use a feature and I like the idea of unlocking and changing your hair color/eye color/makeup to customize your character. I just feel like New Horizons is starting to take away the idea of any sort of permanance your decisions have.
