I didn't see anyone talking about this, so maybe people don't know. I've found that if I push a villager around re-tail to the item I want them to buy, they become interested in buying it.
For people that don't care what their villagers buy, this probably won't be too interesting. However, for people who want their villagers to use certain pieces of furniture or keep a certain style to their house, I thought this would be very useful.
Sorry if everyone knew this already. I just thought this might be helpful.

I do this all the time

except I have this one customized item (with a custom design on it) and no matter how much I push the villiger towards it, they just won't ping for it...I might have to mail it to them :/

Hmm, very interesting

What I'm wondering is if anyone has calculated the exact percentage of how expensive you can make a retail item, but still get the villager to purchase it for sure?

I learned that even if it's really cheap, they might decide to not buy it. Not sure about percentages though...

Really?! Gah, that's lame. I used to always do double the price of Reese and my villagers wouldn't flinch at the price and always bought. But now I'm doing 4x Reese's price and it's usually 50/50 whether they buy or not.

I think the max price a villager will pay for something is 4x-1 (x being the amount Reese is buying it for).
A villager won't buy anything over 9999 bells, though.

I sell all my ore (except gold ones) in retail...they buy it up constantly...no idea what they do with it though since they don't display it but it makes me lots of bells! I gave up on trying to get them to buy certain furniture pieces...I just mail them what I want them to use.

Personality types have something to do with how high they buy something at Re-Tail too. Not for sure of the percentage either I just know my cranky types (Peewee and Bruce) tend to buy my stuff in the 5,000-6,000 range if I'm lucky.

Snootys often buy expensive things too. I find normal villagers spend the least.

I think it's just the custom design you've put up for sale (displayed on an item), and villagers won't buy that. I tried it once, and I couldn't understand why they wouldn't pay any attention to it. So I decided to take it down, which prompted me to pick where to put the design. I can't remember what happened to the item.

As for how much you can sell stuff for; I've been selling for Re-tail price x4 -1 (any and all items, mostly fossils and gems) and no one has rejected the prices. I think it might be related to friendship level. I have experienced villagers hesitating, but they've always ended up buying.

i once put up an item for 1 bell. no one pinged for it or anything. it stayed in the re-tail for weeks, lol.

i put all my fossils at 9999.
Punchy bought one of the fossils, before that though, he wanted to buy something off of me with his whole life savings, which h said was like 200 bells B(
dang lying villagers

Selling fossils for 9,500 is extremely helpful. 95% of the time my villagers buy it :)

LinandKo said that zedamex once sold something for 7,000 Bells! I've never been that high, or experienced a villager that's declined either, if I told them to buy it. ;)
