Is anybody else disappointed by the lighting effects? (HHP)

So I was very very excited to see that we can change the light settings and make rooms with different coloured lighting. I really missed that feature from new leaf. However, while it's nice to have, I'm a little disappointed with how it works in this game.

First of all, it doesn't affect the colour of the lights from the outside. In New Leaf, whatever colour the lights were inside the house, it would shine out of the windows in the same colour if you look at the house from the outside. Also, since the coloured lights came from items like lamps and such, you can still use the room's light switch to either make the room brighter or darker. You didn't have to pick whether to only use coloured lighting OR room lighting. They work independently.

But even that isn't a big deal. The worst of it is that the setting slider for the coloured lights doesn't affect the saturation of the colour, but rather, the brightness. So say I just wanted a slightly purple tint to the lighting but still have the room be well lit, I can't actually do that! I can only dim the light so it's extremely dark. I hope I'm explaining it clearly, but I'm really disappointed. My rooms usually end up looking too dark or overly saturated because of this. Sometimes, it does work out with a theme I like. But I just wish they had 2 sliders. One for brightness and one for intensity.

If there's a feature that unlocks later for this, I would be so grateful, but at this point, I doubt it :(

Does anybody else feel this way or is it just me?

(Don't get me wrong, I love this game so much! This is just something I wish they implemented differently)

I agree with you! I've had a definite struggle in light balance... I've gotten some OK results using furniture lamps + the lighting tool but not ideal, especially since a lot of the ceiling lights don't generate that much light/act largely as spot lighting. There should be a brightness slider and a saturation slider for colored lights. Get rid of the presets and give us a hue slider too if we wanna go CRAZY.

I suppose the answer may be to fill the room with large white ceiling lights so its bright and... slightly colored-- which defeats overall aesthetic in the process! :(

Definitely agree. I was excited to use the mood lighting until I realized it was literally just straight up RED, or so dim you can't see jack without other light sources that aren't affected by the mood lighting anyway.

Now, I honestly don't use it except in rooms/homes that are literally all glow in the dark furniture and meant to be super dark ... Really sad it's like this, haha.

Agreed. Neat idea, but the saturation’s just too strong for 90% of all builds.

I agree and I barely use the lighting effects cause it makes the room hard to see. All the details get lost unfortunately.

Lighting is very meh. I agree it is either too dim or too saturated.
However I have found a way to make the blue lightings work. They're very good for making an "early morning" lighting illusion.

Agreed. I tried to make it work recently and didn't have much success. Instead of the lights being red (or whatever color) and giving off a glow, it's like putting a very saturated or overly dark filter over the whole room. I usually just use the default lighting, or use the orange colored one for warmer tones.

I'm glad it's not just me! I was so excited to try it out but I've only used colored lighting maybe 3 times... I second the wish for a slider for color tint and one for brightness.

I agree with everything you said! I always have issues when trying to make my rooms warm-coloured because unless I make it super dark the room would just turn out really orange!

I absolutely agree, I'm disappointed about the light not showing outside and even more disappointed about the way the coloured lighting works. It could've been great but it just isn't. I don't even bother with the coloured lighting because it's a mess.

I've only used it so far for daytime lighting. Like when there's natural light coming in through the window, and then the colored lighting on top so that it's just a tint. Otherwise your options are either a dark purple clubhouse or a red 70's horror scene

Agree, I've only used the orange one because it's a little bit more natural than the resr

I'd say underwhelmed is more accurate for me. I've been able to do certain things I always wanted, but not others. I agree there should have been two sliders—I seriously thought that I'd eventually unlock a second one! lol

I haven’t used the colored lighting once yet. It just looks too bizarre. I love most everything else about the DLC, but this was definitely a weird choice. Thankfully mood lighting wasn’t a very important feature to me to begin with.

It kinda looks like how those kinds of lightings feel irl tbh. Theyre always too dark for me irl too

You're definitely not the only one!!! I haven't used them at all because they are waaay too saturated. They're really not practical at all which is a little disappointing because they could've had some really cool effects. I have seen some cool ways to use them in certain room themes but they're definitely not for me.

Wait, I'm not sure if I'm getting it. Are you guys talking about the different light sources (like lamps, neon bars, etc) or is it something else? Someone mentioned it being like a filter, and I'm not sure I've seen it yet. I just finish my 11th HHP home, so maybe I still need to unlock that option?

And, I don't know if that's exactly what you guys are saying, but well before the dlc, I wanted to use a different lighting (kinda indirect) on my music production studio (basement). What I did was using a pair of those studio wall spotlights in blue or purple, I don't remember correctly 'cause it's been a while since I've placed them there and I'm colorblind lol. I have the room light switches off, so I get a very dim blue/purple light coming from above (even though the spotlights are wall mounted, I placed them as high as I could).

EDIT: I thought I had a picture of this room on my phone but I don't. Even though I made a very small change to the room (a some to the island), you can see it by visiting my DA.

After 12 houses, there is a lighting feature you unlock in the DLC where you can control the lighting in homes, as in just how the overall light looks instead of just the normal "warm, white or off" if that makes sense. You can choose the color of the lighting which sounds cool, but it's really not... You can't control how colored the lighting is, just the color and how bright the room is.
