Is it completely amiibo-driven?

I'm quite resistant towards amiibo's. I was planning to buy this game, but now I don't know if it's worth it.
If it's completely amiibo-driven, I might want to pass. I also understand amiibo cards for this game are hard to get.

you only need amiibo cards to decorate for the NPCs or call in a certain villager to work/invite them to a lot. But normal villagers show up on mainstreet so you can play without cards and still get all the villagers eventually!

As kiti said. I don't have any of the cards and have designed around 30 houses.
Every in-game day there'll be random villagers who want a new house and you can select which one you want to design.

You can design houses for all 300-something regular villagers without the amiibo cards. There's also more villagers who are being added over time through DLC, so you don't need cards for them either.

Here's what amiibo cards get you:

Regular villagers:
- The ability to design their house sooner if you haven't yet, since you don't need to wait for them to randomly show up (they WILL all show up).
- The ability to set them a role in one of your buildings. For instance, always being shopkeeper of one of your shops.
- The ability to invite them over to any house or building at will. If you invite them, you can't speak to them at all. This is mostly best if you want to take pictures with them present.

Special characters:
- The ability to design houses for them and get a few amiibo exclusive items (like their pictures).
- The ability to invite them over to any house or building at will. If you invite them, you can't speak to them at all. This is mostly best if you want to take pictures with them present.

That's it. IMO, the special character ones are the cards that are most worth it. But all cards are completely optional and it's a fun game even without them.

tbh it's not really necessary to have an amiibo to play. i haven't even really used any of my amiibos since i still get cool villagers to ask me to make their house. amiibos are more like if u want certain villager, if you want to be able to invite them to someone else's house (i think??), or just for the heck of collecting it.

I've only used a few cards so far. One just to unlock Amelia furniture.
If you have friend that have the cards or amiibo figures ask if you can use them.
You can quickly use the card, open the boxes and than say your done. End the day. Later you can go back and decorate their houses. I did this with the Nintendo Zone Louie. I didn't want to spend time decorating his house at a McDonalds. Went home and completed his house.

I didn't use them a lot at first, other than to get the game to recognize that I have the amiibo card. But, now, as I design houses with different themes and try to take good screenshots to post here and on tumblr, I've been using them more. In a way, I think you can be creative with the use of the amiibo cards by selecting certain villagers to go with different things. :] In other words, the functionality of the amiibo cards are mostly for screenshot purposes and/or sharing items (like DLC content a friend missed and you want to give them).

When I first heard of this game I though just that, that it would need all the cards to do anything, but when I saw that they were optional I got the game. It was only after having the game and playing it that I wanted all the cards.

My logic:
Do I need it?
-Yes.
WELL, I don't want it then...
-Nope, you don't need it.
WELL, now I have to get all of them!

I am by no means a reasonably sound person... But now I am obsessed with the cards, even though I don't use them much I intend to scan them all in eventually, I mostly just like that you can invite people over and have a villager party. So for the villagers that ask for like a daycare, or a club, or a store of some sort, I will invite the random villagers over and dress 'em all up so they can partake in the fun!

I have all of series one (almost, couple still en route to my house) And I have scanned a total of 3 cards.... yes.. 3. And the only other cards I scan are to gift people the 7-11 DLC. So you definitely don't need the cards
:)

I am so obsessed with these ridiculous cards, that even though I have them all or am about to have them all... I still catch myself looking for them at the store when I DON'T need them! I can't get away. I understand your obsession lol.

I always loved collecting cards from Lion King cards when I was still a child, Pokemon (never played the game), and then Magic the Gathering (I'm currently on a hiatus; not sure if I'm going to pick up collecting again ><). I've spent so much money on Magic the Gathering cards ><; I don't think I ever want to get rid of my cards because I love looking at the cards just as much as playing (when I have someone to play with).

I am diagnosed with OCD, so my "obsessions" tend to be a little more "extreme" than what a person without anxiety issues may have; but, when it comes to collecting and organizing the cards, it's actually good ~ since I'm always careful with my cards and I have fun organizing them (which I still need to finish doing ><).

I have been using the amiibo cards more since I like taking screenshots of my rooms and post them on my tumblr and on here. As I've been exploring more themes to base my houses on, I've been finding it more fun to use the amiibo cards to help draw out my house's theme. I wasn't planning on collecting them all, but once I had a few, I wanted more lol, plus, I didn't have any luck getting my favorites in my packs right away (or at all). :]

Not at all. If you want to assign certain villagers to "roles" on mainstreet, then yes you'll need the cards but that's not super important to me. I'm pretty sure you can collect all the villagers through recruitment outside of the building, although who you get is random. You need the cards or figure amiibos for special characters though (non villagers). My friend doesn't even have a reader and she's able to play and have fun. The only special character I REALLY wanted and would buy cards for was Isabelle but I was able to use the Amiibos I got from Animal Crossing amiibo festival to get her and Digby so it worked out in the end.
