Is it safe to cancel a system transfer?

So, I finally got my new Nintendo 3DS XL, and I'm currently in the process of doing a system transfer from my old original 3DS.
Thing is, I was stupid and enough to not look up the shortest method, so of course I didn't choose the 'transfer via PC' option, so now I'm wondering: Would it be safe to shut off both consoles and start over?

I highly recommend that you don't shut both consoles in the middle of transferring data, or else you would potentially lose your data. At that point, it's too late to change your mind.

I'm asking whether it's safe or not though, I won't do it unless someone specifically tells me with 100% certainty that it's safe. Thanks though.
