Is stitches rare?

I had (Have him still cause he is so cute) him as one of the very first villagers on my island. My friends always find him when the island hop

No not particularly.
There isn't really such a thing as a rare villager.

When it comes to random move ins and camp site villagers, all villagers have the exact same odds of showing up.

When it comes to who shows up on a mystery island, the game choses species first and then a villager from that species. This means that you are more likely to find a specific villager on one if their species does not have many villagers in it.
This is why you might find yourself finding Zucker a lot when hunting via islands.

For stitches, his species is on the higher side but not too much so. His odds aren't that different to the average.

And then you can always get him via an amiibo which means for lots of people, he's very very easy to get.

So I would have to say that compared to the rest of the villagers, no he is not rare.

Popular, not rare.

When it comes to random move-ins, you're going to get a villager from someone you recently played with (the queue). If they didn't have Stitches move out, there is no chance you'll get him that way.

I can't remember, but your chance of finding him is pretty random for the campsite, and a little more likely if your town is missing a lazy villager.

As for NMT islands, the game rolls species first, and then villager of that species. It also depends on whether or not you already have the same species in your town. So the chance is less than 0.5%

I'm currently working on adopting out other villagers. If you don't find Stitches soon, I'll get him to you.

As others have said, there's no such thing as a "rare" villager (well, I suppose the argument can be made for the Sanrio villagers) but he IS popular. That means, if you want him, you won't have any more or less of a chance of finding him on an island or getting him in the campsite (though it always feels that way when you're seeking one villager in particular), but you may have to pay a bit more for him than other villagers if you buy him off someone (fortunately, the market for villagers is not nearly what it was in the beginning, so people don't generally ask for the same absurd prices they used to if they actually want to sell). If you're hoping to sell/trade him, he is a popular villager, like I said, but the market also isn't what it used to be.

I wouldn't have thought so. I ended up with multiple of his amiibo (people tend to gift me amiibo packs cos yano, I'm the animal crossing lady), more so than any other.

As far as "rare" goes, it seems that's not even a thing anyway, it's more about popularity. Though I suppose technically the sanrios are rare, as they don't just show up. I believe there was some issue with Marty not being in very many packs too, so if that was true, that would make him rare.

Although, as @Serabee mentioned, because he is popular he may cost more to get from someone else, on the positive side, because he is popular, even though the game mechanics itself do not make any villagers rare or common, the popular villagers are more commonly found on others’ islands, so if you are willing/ able to pay for some kind of trade for him (whether nmt, tbt, or igb) he will be relatively easy to find, as opposed to a less popular and therefore less common villager who doesn’t get offered for trade as much.

That's another good point! Someone's more likely to grab him to try and sell/give him to another player if they see him than they would be if he wasn't popular.

Not at all. One of the overrated villagers that shows up in more than its fair share of islands around here.

Popular and rare are not the same. Villagers that everyone wants will likely be considered rare because when you’re looking for something, it never comes. I’ve found Sherb on a Nook island three times and he was one of my first five villagers that I had to build a plot and collect materials for. I definitely wasn’t looking for him and he just appeared. You’ll find Stitches eventually. I would just stop thinking about it and maybe you’ll come across him.

All packs outside of Japan came with all 6 villager cards so if someone didn't get a certain card in their pack, that's a manufacturing issue ...

I would say popular villagers have a lot more chance to show up on villager trading hubs, like on the Bell Tree Forum. Try finding Pate, Claude, Canberra or Dora for example... People don't even bother trading them in because they know they will get nothing in return. But, every day of the week you can find Judy, Marshal, Sherb, Diana, Audie and whatnot readily available for trade on the New Neighbor Network.

I have his amiibo, I can help you for free, dm me 1-2 days before you have an empty plot to make sure I have time to time travel & do the crafting, etc.

As others have mentioned, he is a fairly popular villager so he's not too difficult to find if you want to adopt him from another player.

Regarding mystery islands, there are 16 cubs in the game (not counting Marty who doesn't appear on islands), so Stitches is somewhat rare when it comes to mystery islands.

On mystery islands, the game chooses species first and then villager second. Because of this, the villagers in species of which there are a lot of villagers are mathematically less likely to appear.

For example, if the player is looking for a specific cub like Stitches, the RNG would need to choose 'cub' (1 out of 35 species), and then that specific cub (1/16 chance since there are 16 cubs).

If the player is looking for a specific octopus, the RNG would need to choose 'octopus' (1 out of 35 again), but then that specific octopus (1/3 chance, since there are only 3 octopus villagers).

There's a site/calculator that explains it here: nmt-calculator
