Japanese version of animal crossing wild world?

I am working on learning Japanese, so I thought, what better way to learn than getting a Japanese game?
So I am considering buying the japanese version of animal crossing wild world. Would that work on the DSI or 3DS? Both I got in America, but I heard that the 3DS is landlocked (so you can't play animal crossing new leaf in Japanese on an American 3DS) is this true for regular DS games as well? Or only 3Ds games?
If someone could give me some insight here I would really appreciate it
