I just bought it today, I'm excited for what's in store! If anybody has any tips/tricks for me then that'd be great! Thanks! :)
Also, I was considering buying amiibo cards- i have the new 3ds, but are they worth it? I was thinking maybe I'd just buy 1 or 2 and then stop just to try out the feature but they might be addicting... lol

I advise you hunt for your favourite villagers on sites like eBay rather than buying the packs, as they're relatively useless in HHD, but will be quite useful for the ACNL update approaching. Tips and tricks: MAKE SURE you complete a lesson every day in game (you'll know what that means when you play the game) as this is crucial to making your creations look as nice as possible. Other than that, have fun, and don't rush through all of the gameplay! It only has replay value if you restart your save file IMO, so try not to go on a designing spree and leave yourself with no game to play afterwards.

I agree with MayorJoe - get the villagers you really want on eBay!

I somewhat agree with the previous posters, however do keep in mind packs are only a few bucks (depending on where you are in the world), I bought several packs and got everything I wanted - however they are random keeping in mind so it may be better to buy off of ebay.

I just bought the game as well! The price recently dropped a lot in the US, so I figured I'd give it a try. I'm having a lot of fun so far! I see why people say it's repetitive, but at only $17, I'm fine with my purchase.

Thanks for all the tips! I actually didn't expect all these responses! Sheando, the price dropped in Canada too, but not quite so much, the price totalled to $33 with tax :/ The original price was $45 without tax, though, so I probably shouldn't complain lol

I should get back into the game, but I stopped because it became quite boring for me :-( AC:NL is more my type of version of AC.

I have a collection of the amiibo cards (I have total of 327 i believe) I love to design my favorite villager houses that why I bought the amiibo cards~

Cards for regular villagers aren't technically necessary, but you'll get your favorites more easily than playing repeatedly saving over and over hoping they show up randomly. The specials- Nook, Isabelle, Resetti, etc, you HAVE to have their card to do their house. You can't do it otherwise, because they never show up. People argue Isabelle shows up, but those are for projects on Main Street, not her house, which gets you her cute little scooter from Mario Kart 8 by the way. I recommend getting the specials, it's the only way you can do their houses. As far as the others, yeah, hunt them down on ebay, scalpers have mostly left, so you can find individual ones not too bad, mostly $2 or $3- depends on how many are selling it.
