When you're popular, prices are bound to skyrocket. Not quite the same thing, but you'd pay way more for brand name items, versus knockoffs.

If people will spend the money, it justifies the price increase, no matter what others may say about it. Sure, to the average person, it's a lot, but just because that's the case for you, that same amount could be pocket change to someone else. It's all perspective.
