Now that I'm pretty caught up on sharing a couple notable old pieces of artwork, I can feel comfortable sharing artwork as I make it. I just doodled this. I don't know about you guys, but Steven Universe is a great cartoon and I just adore Pearl!
I also adore sweater vests, so I mixed the two.
As always, thanks for the super duper positive responses on my thread. I'm actually working to get into character design! So hearing compliments like "it's like an actual cartoon" or something along the lines really makes my day because that's exactly what I'm going for. Here's just a little bit of character design work I've put together in the past. I still gotta practice and probably should jump back into the habit of making model sheets...but! I can't keep my focus on original works for the life of me...SO YEAH!
Also! Here's some background work I've done. I've been trying to work with Adobe Flash CS5.5 to recreate my usual, lineless way of drawing in a way that can be easily animated. I'll show the results whenever I get around to that...It's proved to be tricky because it's such a complex thing for Flash considering there are lots of rules to my style (IE. background elements can overlap the character, but if the character overlaps any object of the background there MUST be a thick, black border around whatever body part is overlapping the BG so the colors look right in comparison. It's really tricky to get that working in Flash, trust me!)
So yeah
BACKGROUNDS!
Those last four are actually for an animation I'm putting together where I'm animating a scene from Bob's Burgers in my art style. WEIRD! I know!!! I'm currently obsessed with it. I told you my fandoms were weird! If you're interested, though, here's the rough, sketchy animatic for that.
And here's the character designs for that:
I'm using that as an opportunity to perfect my lineless art style in Adobe Flash CS5.5. This is gonna take a while to animate. I might not finish it, but what I DO finish I will share. I'm sure I'll learn something from the experience regardless.
So yeah!
As usual! Thanks a bunch for the compliments and I hope you enjoy!!! <33333!!!!
*dies* Oh my goodness. *bows* You are now my senpai...even though that sounds really weird.
Did you teach yourself this stuff, or did you take a class or something? I'm sorry, its my dream to become an animator and you just blew my mind!
I'm a self taught artist. I get all of my know-how watching youtube tutorials for the programs I use (particularly Flash.) You can get a REALLY good idea of how to do some basic animation things by watching some british guy talk and following along. Seriously, like all animation tutorials on youtube are british guys, I have no idea why that's a thing.
There's also a really good animation book called The Animator's Survival Kit and that goes over a lot of the basic principles of animation in depth. Of course! The best way to learn animation is through experience, and that's the way I'd recommend you do it. Just start off with simple things like...Blinking or changes in expression. Work your way up to having a singular body part move (an arm waving, head turning) and keep going from there! Things will start to come natural to you the more practice you get in.
The way I like to animate is by making it really bouncy. It makes movements look more exaggerated while also cutting out the need for a lot of annoying in betweens. I get a lot of inspiration from Edmund Mcmillen's simple animation style in Super Meat Boy.
UGH GOSH! This is getting wordy.
I did attend an Art Institute for less than a year. I assure you I learned NOTHING there and always turned to youtube for help because the professors where highly incompetent...I think art schools are kind of a big...SCAM in general! But that's a topic for another day (unless you happen to attend one of the really fancy ones like Calarts, SVA, or RISD.)
But yeah! I totally encourage you to animate stuff. I just love seeing the kinda stuff people animate, so the more the merrier. Good luck!

Ahh thank you!!! I've been thinking about going to an Art & Design College (like Yoobee) to study up on animation but I am still not sure due to the costs. I'm already in debt from a business course (Oh my I did not like that course one bit. I'm sick of paperwork and numbers.). I'm still young and ripe at the age of 19, so I still got time. The way you put it is like Manga college or what do they call it in Japan (I can't remember the official name of the place), a total waste. I'll try and find that book and have a go at what you mentioned. I'll be looking for some videos too. I'll give it my best shot. Thank you, thank you!
The cost of art college is ridiculously expensive. I'd definitely think a lot on it and if it's worth the immense amount of debt before you go. Just see how much you can do on your own. You'll be surprised how far you can go without the assistance of professors paid to tell you your art is bad by means of "motivation" or "because that's how the real world is." To give you an idea, I went to an art institute for not even an entire year and conjured 21,000+ in debt.
Again!!! Good luck! Animations fun, and you can definitely learn it for free, I believe!
Also!
I'm currently doing artwork for my boyfriend's game "Creepy Castle." Here's some enemy duel portraits I drew.

The best advice I can offer is to start animating right now! The sooner you start, the better. Like I said! Watch tutorials on youtube. It helps a lot to look up and research the 12 basic principles of animation. Observe the cartoons you watch; what do you like about them? Try to emulate that! It's always best to start simple. Don't try to jump into big animations. Work your way up to that stuff by doing simple, looping animations. Maybe lip sync a character to a single line from some TV show. Just do anything that gives you a good feel for animation while also not totally overwhelming you. I really, honestly believe you can learn animation without the aid of professors. All the information you need is floating out there. The field of animation is talent based. In most cases, they're not looking for anyone with a degree. They're looking for someone who can actually draw and animate.
Word of advice, though.
As far as actual animation jobs on TV shows, those are pretty limited. Most things are sent overseas and are animated in Korea. Jobs offered in America are usually limited to character design, storyboarding, and animatics. Maybe that's a good thing to keep in mind when pursuing the field of animation. I was ignorant and thought things were animated here the whole time. I've since geared my attention to the art of character design. I have fun making model sheets, and I believe I have a knack for designs in general. Animation is made of all kinds of components. Really, I want to work on cartoons...Maybe not so much "be an animator" if that makes sense? There's so many jobs to do when it comes to cartoons, I'd be happy to have anything I can get. Animation is fun, though! Just a lot of work, and I don't know if it'd be fun for me to do professionally.
BUT yeah!
I don't have a job. I'm not where I want to be yet. Don't take everything I say as 100% fact. Do your own research and make your decisions based on that. I wish everyone good luck with becoming an animator!
NOW!!!! Onto business!!!
Here's some doodles I've made over the past few days:
I loooove your art!!! (I have starry eyes too if you can just see them!) If you ever are in a mood to do a commission or an art trade, I'd love to have a piece of animated art by you

I am eventually planning to take up some commissions. I have no clue how to price for those kinds of things. Especially something of the animated variety!
Thanks again for all the super duper nice compliments, guys! It makes me happy there are people here who enjoy my art. It's been fun updating more frequently than I did before.
Here's a couple new drawings!
Here's a new drawing I just completed. I'm always happy to draw big, big group pictures so this was really fun to work with! I've seriously been drawing fanart of this cartoon for a good eight months, and this is the first time I've ever drawn the family on their own...I mean! I've drawn the family in group pictures full of other characters, but yeah. What a strange occurrence to kind of overlook the main characters for the most part because you're sadly obsessed with a weird, recurring side character that is generally disliked (THE STORY OF MY LIFE BASICALLY.)
Anyways, I hope you like it because I'm certainly pretty happy with how this came out!
