Contrary to popular belief, otaku does not mean you love anime, manga or Japan. It's essentially equivalent to the word "geek". It means a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture (anime, videogames, manga, etc.) to the detriment of their social skills. It's not a positive thing to be referred to as. Neither is weaboo. Being an otaku in Japan is frowned upon and you shouldn't call yourself one unless you want to get made fun of.
wtf let her call herself what she wantsOh man, if I were on my laptop right now, I could tell you why you're most likely not an otaku. Weaboo, definitely. But otaku? That's quite hard to believe.

Just because I say I am learning Japanese and want to move to Japan, it is NOT because of the fact that I love anime and manga. I want to learn about Japanese culture because I was born there, but my family moved out when I was only 9 months so I don't remember anything. So I just want to live and learn about where I was born. If anything, you sound like a weaboo because an actual otaku wouldn't be rude just because they make assumptions too quickly. I understand how you could see me as a weaboo, but it is rude to point it out especially when you don't know my reasons.
And I thought this was going to be a friendly site... I hope you're the only one here to judge people.
Have a good day though.

How do I sound like a weaboo? I watch an anime film maybe once a year and I have no desire to go to Japan or learn Japanese.
Leave her alone lol She just wanted to introduce herself, she doesn't need the dictionary to define herself. How do I sound like a weaboo? I watch an anime film maybe once a year and I have no desire to go to Japan or learn Japanese.

There's nothing wrong with labeling yourself something, people can tell you what the correct "definition" is, but it's really up to you to define who you're as an individual. And I never said that you did either. I am not trying to start an argument here, so I would appreciate it if you could drop it after I explain myself: I am aware that an otaku is a negative term, but I'm not ashamed to say that I am obsessive over anime and manga. I know both definitions of a weaboo and an otaku clearly, I even looked it up before I started calling myself an otaku. I don't just say it without thinking. I know that in Japan it is an offense, but in America people there are few people who know what it means in the first place and most don't care because they don't find it offensive. So I'm proud to be obsessive over anime and manga and no I don't really have a life outside of it honestly, I just sit at home and watch videos and play games. But I'm happy with how I live, and I am completely healthy too, so it makes me not ashamed to admit that I'm an otaku.
And also, thank you to everyone else who was sticking up for me.This has been quite a crazy introduction post... and it's all over the work "otaku." haha. At least I can say I had a weird yet awesome first experience
