There's always a place for a Pokemon, despite what "tier" they're in. Some of them need stat boosts for help, but others are pretty decent by themselves. I've out-speed and defeated a bunch of typical "OU" Pokemon with RU, UU, and sometimes NU. You just need to think outside the box and bam. Most people don't know how to take out those kinds of Pokemon due to being completely focused on Smogon, but there's a way around anything.
Good luck battling with your friend, I think that's great.
