Amazon is turning The Lord of the Rings into a TV show (Verge)

A few months ago Amazon announced they were creating a TV series based in Middle-Earth. The story is supposed to a prequel to The Lords of the Rings. According to reports, Amazon is planning on putting a huge chunk of money into this (a few hundred million on the first two episodes).

I'm a huge fan of Lord of the Rings so I'm looking forward to this. I am hoping it stays true to the books/original lore. Anyone else looking forward to the series?

Due to the film adaptations it'll make it easier for them to ruin it if it doesn't meet fans expectations, but if they pull it off that'll be awesome (so long as they don't bleed it (i.e. make another show after this one)).

More of middle earth can't be a bad thing right?

I'd hope it won't be a bad thing. I have to be honest, I love the LotR movies but I can't stand The Hobbit movies. They were changed way too much and, in my opinion, for worse. One benefit of what I think Amazon is doing is that it might be harder to screw up canon. I assume they will write their own content and tie it to Middle-Earth based on Tolkien's lore in all the books published.

I've never read the books but we own them and I do remember my parents being confused in some scenes during the hobbit trilogy.

I've only dipped my toes in the lore but I think it'll be pretty since they've got a load of cool things to choose from.

I am not super well-read on the books eithee but I have read wiki pages upon wiki pages of the lore. There is just so much in there to build off of, which keeps me in high hopes.

ooooh!! i love lord of the rings and all things tolkien related, so this should be interesting! a tv series will have much more flexibility than a movie to tell a story, so i hope they use that to their advantage. if it's a prequel type thing, i wonder if it's going to follow the story of the silmarillion (which i still haven't read...).

and i agree with you, trundle, on the jackson movies. the lotr series was great, but the hobbit not as much. i did enjoy it, but the last one was just so odd?? i like the first movie, though i barely remember the second and third. and the romance between kili and tauriel was just so ? unnecessary?

all in all this is exciting news to hear, i love tolkien sm so i'm super excited to see what they make of it.

im not a fan of lord of the rings and ive barely watched the movies but they were like........ super long with 70% being giant armies fighting or something??? where it felt like in sports animes during the long matches that last for ten episodes, like just get it over w already?? obviously i havent read the books but a tv series seems like it would b just 15 hours war and maybe a few hours uhh story ???

amazon: we cant afford paying our employees enough for them to not be on food stamps :///
also amazon: hey let's make a tv show for hundreds of millions of dollars even though we arent really a tv company hehe

I've never read any of the LotR books (though I'd like to eventually), but I have read the Hobbit. It's a good book, but it had no business being made into three movies.

I might try reading the trilogy and then check out this series.

I have read the first book LotR, currently working on the rest. I completely share your thoughts here. The Hobbit is one of my favorite books and I wish the movies were what the books deserved.

I am a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan and I’m so excited about this series. My true love lies with the books, but I’m sure this TV series will be great :)

I can't be in this thread, talking about the Hobbit movies literally gets me so worked up,,,,,

My caseworker recommended me the LOTR books, but I kindly declined. It just doesn't interest me (reading them), but I did like the movies a bit when I was younger. Perhaps I'll give this a go. And if I like it, I'll probably read the books.

If you wanted to get into the LOTR books, The Hobbit is a fun way to ease yourself into them. It's a very easy read and hard to put down.

I hated the movies as a kid, because every year on Christmas my parents would drag me and my siblings out to see them because my dad was a big LOTR fan. And every year on Christmas I'd have to sit through 3 hours of high fantasy while my toys were at home waiting for me. I actually didn't get into LOTR until I read the books in like, 2014. Give the books a chance some day. Even if it turns out you don't enjoy them, there's always something to be learned and taken from a book, even if you don't notice it.

kind of unrelated, but did you guys know there was some kind of lord of the rings musical? i dont think it did that well from what i read but i LOVE the soundtrack. it's on youtube, this one is personally one of my favorites :D

We had to read The Hobbit at school, decades ago for English.

I really enjoyed it.

I read the first book in the trilogy, and I remember liking it, but can't remember any of it.

Wouldn’t a prequel to LotR just be the Hobbit???

None of the Middle Earth stuff has ever really done anything for me, but good on Amazon for giving folks more of that.

I thought that's what The Hobbit was!

well, it's not really a prequel considering it was written before lotr was. when they mean "prequel to lotr" i assume they either mean just like, stuff that happened between th/lotr, or before the hobbit and the lore of middle earth and stuff.

I believe it's supposed to be before Bilbo left the Shire. There are centuries upon centuries of lore before the events of The Hobbit take place.
