I recently bought the Kat Von D foundation & I'm very disappointed in how it looked on me. It was very patchy & made my pores appear bigger than I've ever seen. & the tones were very strange so it can be difficult to find a match in that line. Being decently pale can be quite a burden when it comes to foundation, as the makeup industry does not cater well for light & dark skin tones. My solution is to continue using my Colorstay with a drop of lightening drops. Hopefully that will prevent the Colorstay from oxidizing, because that is the only thing about it that I can't stand.

SO-- What products have you tried that do not live up to the hype?

Bonus Question: What are your unpopular opinions involving makeup? (Whether it be application, the industry, the stigma, etc.)

I love Kat Von D's lock it powder foundation but I've never tried the liquid

Idk I've never been super disappointed with any makeup I've bought that I can remember (I'm not counting drug store brands cause those are inexpensive and I typically don't expect much from them anyway so occasionally I'm pleasantly surprised)

Also I don't get the hype of contouring unless you're planning on getting photographed like who tf has time for that

though i haven't personally tried it, the "screw" mascara from hourglass seems super overrated considering its price tag. from the videos i've watched, it just doesn't seem like it does anything special/different?? i've also heard a lot of good things about benefit's they're real mascara, but when i tried it myself, it wasn't that great lmao. maybe i just got a bad batch? other than that, i can't think of much. I'm a makeup wearer but I'm not the type to test out too many new products when i already have things i like. as for a sort of unpopular opinion...highlighting is also sort of overrated?? i think it looks nice when it's subtle and seen when the light hits it, but i don't like when it's overused and makes someone's face look shiny and metallic lol. i also don't like the whole tip of nose highlight trend. of course they're free to wear it however they want but, just my onion~~

I only tend to wear a bit of foundation these days due to being able to find nothing that's good for my eyes. This Est?e Lauder double wear foundation was supposed to be one of the top rated....cost me double what I would normally spend and it's just useless. I haven't noticed any kind of difference between it and the cheaper one. Think it's just the brand name that has bumped the price and popularity up. I also bought the Est?e Lauder sumptuous black mascara at the same time, thinking that buying something more expensive I would get better quality. Didn't seem any different to me than the cheaper brand I've tried before. So on the whole I think Est?e Lauder make up from my point of view is quite overrated. Just my opinion of course

a lot of products. most products at the dollar store are the same quality as professional ones in sephora or something. however sephora products last a lot longer (and are more socially acceptable in some way) so i buy those. but when i just ran out of mascara and i know i'm not going to sephora anytime soon, i go with the simple mascara from walgreens.

I don't know if nail polish counts as makeup but I think chanel's nail polish is really overrated and overpriced. I can buy a better one for $2.

Yeah I have figured out now that the cheap versions are much better than the brand names. Won't be spending money on them again, cost me around ?60 just for mascara and foundation that just wasn't anything special. And I hate wasting money. I guess most of the branded things could be considered overrated

I had the same issue with Double Wear! I found it got really cakey on my t-zone, too. Honestly my fave foundation is Loreal True Match - it's one of the only ones I've found that matches my skintone well - I have a neutral undertone and trying to find a good shade of foundation is such a chore...

I hated the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. I love all my other TF products so I bought into the hype, but it's so thick and clumpy, but also watery?? ugh. I swatched it once and have never used it again.

Also Porefessional is kinda meh to me. I prefer the Hourglass or Laura Mercier primers (minis because they expensive af), but tbh sometimes I use BB cream as a base instead.

Honestly sometimes you just can't beat drugstore products though. When I was earning lots of money I used to spend so much like $600 in a week onceon makeup because I thought $$$ = better quality, but I love me some Covergirl mascara. And Essence everything!!!

Idk tbh. I wear most of what my sister and mom wear. We all have somewhat similar taste as far as brands go, but since I never talk to anyone else about makeup I have no idea. We usually shop Urban Decay (which I absolutely love), some Sephora brand (though we usually just use Sephora to get ahold of other brands with my mom's discounts), and Kat Von D.

I'm just go out on a limb though, and assume that Kat Von D is overrated, as well as most other celebrity brands. Because they're celebrities. That's why, lol.

I'm not too knowledgable about make up brands since I have my staples (nor do I wear a lot) but I do think brands like MAC and Inglot are a little overrated. They have nice colours but their lipsticks dry out my lips sooo bad. The only thing I like about Inglot is their pigments so I can make my own lip tints or eyeshadows.

Really the only difference in drugstore & high-end is the brand you're paying for. High-end caters to more skin tone ranges than the drugstore, though. I contour my cheekbones only, as they are already prominent & one of my favorite features. But carving out a new face shape can be such a hassle, OML.

Ah what a coincidence, I just watched a review on that Hourglass mascara. I was like...alright, looks like any ole' mascara, really. Yeah, the highlighting trend can be a hit or miss for me. If I'm going to do it it's going to be very subtle w/ no glitter. But kudos to those who can pull it off fabulously!

Oh, I no longer look in the direction of Est?e Lauder after a sales rep tried selling me foundation in the shade "sand" when I'm actually ivory!

Yeah once again, you're paying for the brand when a big name is attached to it. Although, I'm not hatin' on her Shade+Light palette, it was pretty ight! ;)

If you're going to buy lipstick from MAC, I really suggest the satin finish. They aren't nearly as drying but you still need lots of chapstick. I only have an Inglot gel eyeliner that I haven't used yet, so we'll see if it does me good. Fingers crossed!

I actually love my Better Than Sex mascara, but it gives me anxiety easily because it seems watery, as you said. Hmm, maybe try combing through your eyelashes & then wiping the mascara wand off so it doesn't have too much product. I found every time a mascara was too much to handle, that technique cut me some slack. Let me know if you try it! Otherwise, Too Faced is amazing.
