The two best ways for making bells (in my opinion) are with fruits and turnips.
With fruits, you should got to another town and ask for their fruit, and make sure it's a different fruit then what started out in your town. Anyways plant the fruit, then pick it when the tree has grown and continue planting the fruit untill you have large orchards. Then you can start selling the fruit for big bells.
Turnips also have the potential to making millions. On sunday morning find the Joan and buy as many turnips as you can from her. Usually she sells turnips for about 100 bells each. Then everyday ask nook "turnips prices" and he will tell you how much he will buy the turnips for. Sometimes he will buy turnips for as low a 50 bells, other times he will buy them for up to 600 bells.
Selling bugs and fish is also good for bells. Plant a lot of palm trees along the ocean and at night rare bugs will come on them. These bugs can sell for up to 6,000 bells. Not bad.

Turnips is the best so far, but fruit is quite hard, if u have a full bag for foriegn fruit, then it will be 7.5k so to get 100k u need to collect fruit 13 times and for 1m u need to collect fruit 133 times so need 2000 fforiegn fruit to get 1m :S I dont no, i hate using maths in animal crossing

I never understood how to do the white turnips, too complicated, lol. I use the red turnips every once in a while, cuz when they grow to full size its an easy 15,000 bells.
Ask people to give you money...there are some philanthropists around here...Otherwise, like already stated, I suggest huge fruit orchards, all near Nook. It's extremely time consuming. But there's turnips, which relies on luck basically. It's not your average stock market.

the fair way
fish on the beach at night in the summer and you can catach loads of really rare and pricy fish, also if you see a really big looking shadow in the rivers its probly a rare fish like a dorodo, I've caught three or four already also while fishing pay attention to the trees along the beach line aspecaly if there palm trees you can get rare bugs and there also pricy, fossils help when there identified by Blathers, and whoring the friut in your twon all at once can help in a pintch. also get the silver shovel and memorize the rocks in your town if your backed up aganst a hole or a wall you can get up to 8000 with a normal or golden shovel, and the silver shovel doubles the value of a strike or two randomly, get the silver shovel from the city after the stores close head all the way to the right along the street sometimes resiti's hub is open. sell event funiture like the egg, harvest, spooky, jingle, pirate, or other rare furniture for lots and lots of bells. you can fill your town with forign fruit or bring your fruit to a town that it isn't native too
the cheat ways
start your town a year back and put about ten thousend bells in the account, save and move your twon a year foword, you should get 100,000 bells.
use the home brew channal to modify your game....if your a cheater like that

paying off your house is always the first on my list, donating to town hall can get you a new bridge, a fountain, and a lighthouse or windmill.
save your bell and get prizes from the bank if you save that maxamum amout you get am ABD mechene for your house
spend spend spend! save up points at nook by ordering expencive items and you can dress yourself as Link, Minda, Samus,or Wario or get some classy items like a yoshi egg or triple shells
refined spending, spend on a compleate set at gracies and get major poins with the HRA as well as geting lucky items like the triforce from red, or the three types of lucky cat
