Ok I didn't have evidence of it in New Leaf but they other day Chief told me that if I planted money a money tree would sometimes grow. The key word being 'sometimes' meaning it must be a pretty rare thing!!!

I've seen 1 in a dream town once but thought it was a glitch.

Do you have one? How much did you plant to obtain it?

How many tries did it take?

I have two money trees in front of my mayor's house since I thought it matched nicely with the gold exterior. I usually go a bit overboard and plant 90,000 bells at a time.

The chance of a money tree growing depends on how much you plant. If you only plant 1,000 bells you only have a 1% chance of a money tree growing. But if you plant 99,000 bells you have a 99% chance of one growing. You also have to have a golden shovel. I have about ten money trees in my town.

Oh, and you can only plant one money a tree a day. If you try to plant multiple in one day, only one will grow money. You have to grow them one at a time.

I've had a 100% rate, but it comes at a financial loss, as I won't get it back, but I used the gold shovel, and buried 99,000 bell bags, and they all grew- I had to do just ONE a day, and I used regular saplings at first, chopped them down, and replaced them with money trees. I put them all around my town plaza in honor of my Wild World town that has a bunch. In fact, I even have a few in the original Animal Crossing, because I used to plant bags in the glowing holes- again, using the 99,000 bell bags.

Oh yeah, I have planted three to four money trees and only one of the four grew into a money tree. That one tree had 30,000 bells each and there were three sack of bells so total was 90,000 bells if I remember exactly. Hehehe it was great and kind of an easier/faster way to grow the regular sapling trees too since the ones that don't become a bell tree ends up being a normal sapling tree, it see,s faster since you don't have buy and gather up so many/all the saplings

I plant regular saplings by burying money with my golden shovel lol... I once got a money tree from doing it which was super weird because I really wasn't trying to and I had only buried 1 k. I harvested it because I wanted a regular tree there and not a money tree, but it was kind of cool ^^

Quick question, how many bells do you get from a money tree?

You always get 90k if bell bags grow, but the odds of the tree having bells is proportional to how many bells you bury with you getting an extra 1% chance of getting a bell tree for every 1,000 bells you bury. The problem is that if bury a bunch of bell bags of any amount over the long run, you'll actually end up losing more bells than you get from the trees that grow. So basically, money trees in ACNL are just a money pit. If you like them as decorations for your town, that's great, but you'll only end up in the green financially with them if you get really lucky.

you need to use the golden shovel to even have any chance of growing a money tree
it's not a very good way to make money, it jsut looks cool
and the probability of it growing into a money tree goes up with the bell amount planted

also like lencurryboy i use my golden shovel to plant regular saplings in bulk. i've never gotten a money tree from planting 1k bags, though.
