Hi - can you please advise the best way for my son who is 7 years old to connect safely with other players? I'm not into the game and was hoping for some friendly advice. He wants to trade with players visit islands, but in a safe environment......

How does it work?

hi! i'd honestly suggest that the safest way to play multiplayer on this game would be either to play locally (ie with other users in the same room instead of online) or to supervise his online play if he will let you. i'm fairly new to this forum but i think that users here on TBT are fairly safe to trade with/visit/etc for the most part, but on other websites and communities there are people who will take advantage of newer players and scam them out of in-game items etc, or even worse :(

fortunately all the online parts of this game require having a nintendo switch online subscription so if you don't want to risk anything then he won't be able to access the online services at all. however so long as you're not adding strangers as friends i think it ought to be fairly safe for the most part - visitors have limited access to the host's island ie they can't use their shovel or axe to destroy trees/flowers and they can't pick up items which aren't purposefully 'dropped' on the ground.

perhaps you could help him post on here, or post on his behalf? you could both make a thread on nook's cranny to ask about trading specific items with other players, or make a thread on the airport saying you're looking for islands to visit and explore :)

this is very nice to see by the way! it's so good to have parents who are supportive of their kids' interests even when they're video games, lol. best of luck figuring out an arrangement that works for you both!

Thanks for taking the time to reply in such a comprehensive way. I am nearly 50 and one of the first generation of gamers.......and really do support my son in the social aspect of gaming. Some of my best mates are gamers I have met over the years, online and then over time in person.

Your advice is excellent and I will do exactly as you suggest: he is keen to visit another island or get someone to visit his island, as he has seen in on YouTube, and I will make sure I supervise! Thanks again......

Just wanted to say this post is so wholesome. I love it, it’s made me all warm inside!
im fairly new to this forum, but from what I’ve seen everyone is extremely helpful and polite, not much I can add to the amazingly informative comment above! But I was also going to suggest you maybe positing for him on here so you know the goings on and who he’s connecting with etc.
But lovely to see he’s eager to connect up through animal crossing, and more so that you support him! I wish my parents had understood more about the gaming world when I was younger ☺️

Thanks Beth; I've already got him connected and on another island with a member here and he is over the moon. I'm watching his every move in game and for real: He is literally jumping around with excitement, and the island he went has a helpful owner - my son is his first ever guest!

Now he needs to work out what to do other that chat!

I love gaming for this!

Love it!
Glad he’s happy, I remember how exited I was going to explore someone else’s town for the first time!

Good luck finding friends for him, always be sure to monitor his play with members online! there are many people who are parents on the forums, but might he hard to find friends for your boy!

Welcome to TBT! As others have mentioned, TBT is a fairly safe place when compared to other websites/forums for Animal Crossing. There‘s a WiFi feedback option that lets you leave a positive or negative review after every trade. I hope your son enjoys playing Animal Crossing! :D

I would also like to add there's a parental app for the Nintendo switch so you could monitor your children activities on there.
