Nearly put a Trojan Virus on my Dad's MacBook Air

Remember about my avatar thread? When I looked it up on the MacBook, the gif wasnt working. So I had to go through this BS to put Filmora on it. Unfortunately, I couldn't export it without the license literally at your face, so I was desperate to find a license key. I looked up YouTube, found a potential video... Then I saw this comment. The profile picture was cars 3, so I was like, eh. Then, I see a link to a "free license key". I then started installing it, because I was so gullible to getting my gif done.. then I looked at the comments. IT WAS A TROJAN VIRUS! It was just about to finish downloading, So I shut down my Mac. I couldn't log in for the past 10 minutes, So I was scared ****less that my dad would find out. It started working fine after... Now I seriously have a fear of downloading ANYTHING from the internet ;-;

Edit: I only wanted the license key so I wouldnt have that damn watermark. Anyone have any free video editing software for Mac?

Always be cautious of links on the internet. Does your dad's laptop have some sort of program that detects viruses?

Nope, because he never uses it. Why does the internet have to be complicated? Also, after I managed to get rid of the virus, I have a personal **** YOU comment to him then reported his comment.

This is your fault tbh , but its okay , we all do errors.
It remembers me when i once installed a "Remove WAT" app. for Windows to make my windows be original (because its original , its just idk why this message of that its not original keeps poping up) and suddenly as soon as i saw the PC started going crazy and i ended getting a Chronium virus , luckily , i figured this virus worked with Internet connected to the PC (because it would open a ****load of ads) and managed to delete that and make my PC work as always.
Now , my tip for when you want to do a gif of something is the following (not sponsoring stuff or anything):
-1 : Search the video on Youtube of what you want your gif to be of (Ex : Marie in Splatoon 2)
-2 : Go to "giphy.com" and place your Youtube URL there and edit how long do you want the gif to be and what part do you want.
-3 : After the gif was created , save it on your PC and then go to "ezgif.com" , and choose the resize option if you need to resize your gif (You can also create gifs on that page , however , it requires frames of pics and overall Giphy its better)
-4 : Most important step : Save the .gif on your PC and then go to imgur and upload your gif there , this is because ezgif will delete your gif after some hours and if you use the ezgif link from that .gif , hours later your gif image will be deleted.

And thats it , easy , without virus , safe af , and overall no licenses ****. Be careful.

Everyone makes mistakes. In the future, make sure to be cautious of downloading links and files that you don't trust.

Getsafe.org have a good guide to protecting yourself on the internet (including viruses, spyware, ransomware, trojans and more).

yup, ezgif, imgur and giphy are great and safe for creating and resizing gifs. you can also resize jpegs and pngs on ezgif

There's no harm in just downloading something. Only once executed can it pose any threat, and that threat is limited if it doesn't gain admin privileges. Plus, you're on a Mac and odds are it was a .exe, so... meh. Macs don't get malware, remember? (this isn't entirely true, but close enough).

i think macOS is slightly more secure than windows, but both are still ulnerable to viruses and malaware.

i got a trojan horse from what i think was a pop up on a... uh, pornographic website. viruses can driveby upon entering a url
also had a hard drive corrupted from a pirated video game.
